This year we’re continuing our weekly look at unique festivals, events, and attractions that are within an easy driving distance of the Mansfield area. We call these “Summer Road Trips.” Of course, we regularly feature the many extraordinary places to visit right here in Richland County and encourage our readers to get out and experience what is on offer in our own backyard.
Today we look a bit to the past while celebrating the tastes of summer.It’s not always the case, but it’s not unusual that when lovers of old architecture and history congregate, some “liquid refreshment” is close at hand. Such is the case in the coming weeks in Ohio’s Capital City. Two different opportunities exist to take the short jaunt to Columbus for some opportunities to experience the past in a unique way.
On July 23, it’s the traditional Back Alley Tavern Tour.
The question is asked – which came first—the street or the alley? Alleys were once a dumping ground, but what a difference 100 years makes! Downtown alleys have special uses, regulations, design, and charm within the urban fabric. In addition to maintaining the pedestrian scale of architecture, they are home to innovative uses, little known histories, and charming watering holes.
Drinks are on your own tab on this walking tavern tour where we’ll wind our way to three establishments. We’ll provide a few snacks and sparkling narration along the way.
The fun takes place between 6:30 PM and 9:00 PM, and the cost is just $20 to $25. Online tickets are available here.
Then, on August 1 at 5:30 PM, the historic Hoster Brewery, 477 South Front Street (pictured), hosts “Buildings Reborn ’19.”
