Our Summer Road Trip Series is back for 2025, which each post sharing a unique attraction or event that you might consider adding to the mix of great local summer fare.

Looking for a refreshing and meaningful day trip? The Greater Cleveland Aquarium is offering a perfect mix of education, relaxation, and appreciation—especially for those who serve. Located in the city’s revitalized Flats West Bank district, the Aquarium is easily reachable from Mansfield and makes for a fun and family-friendly getaway that can be completed in a single day.

Free Entry for First Responders and Military

Over four upcoming holiday weekends, the Greater Cleveland Aquarium is extending a special thank-you to those who keep our communities safe. Active-duty military, veterans, and first responders will receive free parking and complimentary admission during Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Veterans Day weekends.

The offer covers a wide range of public service professionals, including police officers, firefighters, EMTs, nurses, physicians, and even 911 dispatchers. As general manager Stephanie White put it, “These are demanding jobs, and an aquatic adventure is an opportunity to escape and unwind.”

An Immersive Experience for All Ages

Visitors can explore freshwater and saltwater environments, learning about everything from Ohio’s native fish to creatures of the deep sea. Guests may find themselves face to face with a sandtiger shark, mesmerized by a camouflaged octopus, or surprised by a turtle peeking out of a pond.

The Aquarium offers several interactive experiences daily, including Sharks & Scuba Underwater Q&As and up-close animal encounters that let visitors engage their curiosity and sense of adventure. The layout is compact but thoughtfully designed, making it easy to navigate in a few hours while still offering a rich and rewarding experience.

Planning Your Trip

To take advantage of the Waves of Appreciation Weekends offer, qualifying guests must present a valid ID and their parking ticket at the Aquarium’s ticket counter on the day of their visit. The offer is valid for the individual only; additional guests must pay regular admission—$19.95 for adults, $13.95 for children 2–12, and free for kids under 2 or anyone 100 years old or better.

The Greater Cleveland Aquarium is located at 2000 Sycamore Street, a scenic spot near the Cuyahoga River, with nearby options for dining and riverside strolling to round out your day.

Why It’s Worth the Trip

For those in Richland County looking to honor service and enjoy a little aquatic escape, this Cleveland destination offers both. It’s not only a chance to learn something new and marvel at nature’s design, but also a moment to feel recognized and appreciated.
