This October and December, Oak Hill Cottage is offering a rare opportunity to step back in time with its seasonal Gaslight Tours, allowing visitors to experience Victorian life by the soft glow of gaslights. These guided tours, which begin after dusk, offer a unique glimpse into the mid-19th century ambiance and highlight the evolution of lighting technology before the advent of electricity.

Experience a Different Kind of Tour

The Gaslight Tours at Oak Hill Cottage will take place on October 25 at 8:00 PM, with additional dates scheduled for December 13 and 20 at 7:30 PM. Unlike the regular daytime tours, the Gaslight Tours are designed to provide an authentic evening atmosphere, reminiscent of how the home would have been lit during the Victorian era.

The focus is on the historical use of gaslights, an often-overlooked aspect of domestic life in the 1800s. Guides will share stories about the history, function, and importance of gas lighting, creating a deeper connection to the past as visitors explore the cottage’s seven gables, five double chimneys, and seven marble fireplaces.

Reservations Required

The Gaslight Tours are $5 for adults and just $1 for children under 12, making it an affordable family outing or date night. Due to the intimate nature of these tours, reservations are required. To secure a spot, interested visitors should call 419-524-1765 and leave a message.

A Seasonal Tradition at Oak Hill Cottage
