The Richland Early American Center for History (REACH) is hosting its annual American Heritage Days, offering visitors a chance to experience life in 18th and 19th-century America. This immersive event, filled with live historical reenactments, will take place on Saturday, October 5 and Sunday, October 6 in South Park (Park Avenue West at Brinkerhoff Avenue). The event is free to the public, making it an ideal outing for history enthusiasts and families alike.
Event Highlights
Step Back in Time with Living History Reenactors
American Heritage Days will transport you back to early America, where you can explore the daily life of our ancestors through interactive demonstrations and engaging activities. The event will feature speakers, musket demonstrations, 18th-century blanket traders, displays of Indian artifacts, old firearms, and period dances. Visitors can also observe blacksmithing and rope making at the blacksmith shop, bringing history to life in vivid detail.
Cooking Demonstrations by Laura Supinger
Laura Supinger, known for her engaging presentations on early American life, will be demonstrating 18th-century cooking in the cabin over an open hearth. This hands-on demonstration will showcase the skills and techniques used to prepare meals during the colonial era, providing a fascinating glimpse into the past.
Blacksmithing at Hawks Nest Forge
Witness traditional blacksmithing as Benjamin Hoffman of Hoffman Reproductions takes over the forge on Saturday, showcasing his expertise in crafting tools and household items as they were made centuries ago. On Sunday, Todd Salsburey will continue the demonstration, giving visitors a chance to see the artistry and hard work involved in this age-old craft.
Interactive Musket Demonstrations and More
Throughout the event, attendees can participate in musket demonstrations, where reenactors will display the precision and discipline required to operate 18th-century firearms. These demonstrations offer a thrilling and educational experience for all ages, highlighting the challenges faced by soldiers during the Revolutionary War period.
