The Richland County Foundation (RCF) has announced an early opening for its 2024 college scholarship applications, encouraging students to take advantage of the additional time to apply during the holiday break in December. This proactive move aims to give students ample opportunity to gather required materials and submit their applications well before the deadline.
Opportunities for a Wide Range of Students
The Foundation’s scholarship program is designed to support:
- Graduating high school seniors
- Current college or career tech students
- Non-traditional students returning to education
Previous scholarship recipients are eligible to reapply, though it’s important to note that none of the scholarships are automatically renewable—students must submit a new application each year.
Application Requirements and Deadlines
New applicants, including high school seniors, need to meet the following criteria:
- A minimum GPA of 2.5
- Residency in Richland County or a diploma from a Richland County high school
- Enrollment in an accredited educational institution
Returning applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0.
The deadline for college scholarship applications is April 1, 2025, giving students several months to prepare their materials and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, a critical component of the application process. Special Focus on Career Technical Education (CTE) Scholarships
For those pursuing certifications or credentials at technical institutions, RCF also offers Career Technical Education (CTE) scholarships. These applicants must demonstrate academic readiness using one of the following:
- WorkKeys Skills Assessment
- WebXam Test Report
- Relevant academic transcripts
Unlike traditional scholarships, CTE applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and awards are determined within eight weeks of submission. Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
Financial Need as a Key Factor
Scholarships from RCF are primarily awarded based on financial need. To determine eligibility, the Foundation evaluates:
- Tuition, books, fees, room, and board expenses
- Institutional scholarships or grants already awarded to the applicant
- Information from the FAFSA, which generates a Student Aid Index to measure financial need
Completing the FAFSA is required for all college scholarship applicants and may be necessary for CTE applicants, depending on their program.
