It’s not your grandparent’s college experience, or your parent’s, or even your older sibling’s. Now tech and textbooks will go hand-in-hand on the campus of The Ohio State University at Mansfield.

First-year students will be carrying technology in their book bags this coming autumn semester that will change the way they learn and prepare them for their future employment in a fast-paced, technological world.

First-year students will be given a free iPad package that includes the iPad Pro, smart keyboard, case, Apple pencil, Apple Care+ and a suite of applications to enhance their learning experience. The technology is part of the Digital Flagship University initiative. The partnership with Apple supports educational innovation for students and economic development opportunities.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn and grow in ways that will help them enter their careers prepared for whatever opportunities and challenges come their way,” said Ohio State Mansfield Interim Dean Norman Jones.

The Digital Flagship University initiative also includes university-wide opportunities for students to learn coding skills to enhance their career-readiness in the app economy.

A design lab on the Columbus campus will offer technological training and certification to students, faculty, staff and members of the broader community interested in developing apps in Swift, the Apple programming language used to write some of the most successful apps in the App Store. The lab will support educational innovation, career development for students and economic development opportunities for all of the university’s campus locations.

“The Apple technology package will be distributed to first-year students this fall,” said Mansfield Campus Enrollment Director Jennifer Fry. “We can’t wait to see all the ways our students and faculty put this technology to use in the classroom. Their innovation will lead to new and interesting discoveries.”

Beyond the enhancements to teaching, learning and discovery, the technology will expand access to interactive textbooks and other digital course materials.

There is still an opportunity for interested students to be a part of this initiative in autumn semester of 2018. Ohio State Mansfield is still accepting applications. Schedule a campus visit at mansfield.osu.edu/visit to learn more.
