The Ontario Local Schools Board of Education held a productive meeting last week, featuring updates, recognitions, and key decisions. Superintendent Keith Strickler summarized highlights, focusing on community collaboration, facility upgrades, and new programs.

Mayor Honors Community Spirit

Ontario Mayor Kris Knapp recognized Cathleen Johnson for organizing a community cleanup day. Johnson’s initiative united the school district and residents, highlighting the importance of collaboration in enhancing public spaces.

High School Leadership Updates

Ontario High School Principal Chris Smith and teacher Hannah Sudduth shared updates on new programs for the 2024-2025 year, including expanded extracurricular activities, new clubs, and community-building events aimed at increasing student engagement.

Facility Improvements and Staffing Changes

The Board approved a resolution for architectural services to renovate the district’s bus garage, improving operational efficiency. Staffing changes included hiring ten substitute teachers, new cooks Crystal Holbrook and Bambi Glasener, and the acceptance of two resignations. Maya Reeder was approved as a substitute secretary, with Brendan Cain appointed as E-Sports Club coach and Lydia Giefer and Riley Them as volunteer coaches for girls’ soccer and swimming.

Grants and New Fund to Support Learning

The Board approved the Warrior Wishmaker Fund to support student projects. Three grants from the Richland County Foundation were also approved:

  • Project-Based Learning in 2nd Grade: $1,265.66 for Tonya Winningham.
  • Wellness Class Supplies: $509.79 for Amy Kurtz-Nagel.
  • She Blinded Us with Science Program: $1,082.09 for Michelle Smith.

Community Donations

The Board recognized donations, including robotics equipment valued at $31,260.50 from Buckeye Educational Systems and $11,350 from the Ontario Athletic Boosters Club for a soccer wind screen. Stingel School also received school supply donations from local businesses.

Facility Requests Approved

Several facility use requests were approved:

  • Stingel Gym for 3rd-5th grade basketball practices.
  • High School Classroom and Pool for lifeguard and instructor classes.
  • Ontario Family Swim events for recreational activities.
  • Stingel Library for the Good News Club by the Child Evangelism Fellowship of Ohio, Inc.
