Students in 4th through 8th grade kicked off the Mid Ohio Educational Service Center Academic Challenge season last month with meets on January 12th, 13th, 26th and 27.  Students compete as teams, answering questions about a wide range of topics including literature, fine arts, geography, history, math, and science.

Academic Challenge Coordinator Leanna Ferreira said, “So many coaches, students, and parents expressed their excitement to be back to in-person tournaments! The students brought this same excitement to the building as they competitively interacted, bringing even more fun to this event.”

Eighteen teams from Crestview, Lexington, Northmor, Ontario, Plymouth-Shiloh, Sacred Heart, St. Mary’s, Shelby, and Mansfield City’s Spanish Immersion participated in the 5th Grade Academic Challenge meet on January 11th. Lexington Team A won with team members Noah T., Jesse S., Odin S., and Srirar G. Spanish Immersion Team A with members Noah King, Jarrett Bame, Liam McCumiskey, Mason Weidemeyer, and Asher Robbins was the runner-up. 

On January 12th, eighteen teams from Crestview, Lexington, Northmor, Ontario, Plymouth-Shiloh, St. Peter’s, Shelby, Mansfield City’s Spanish Immersion, and Wooster participated in the 4th Grade Academic Challenge. The team from Lexington Central with members Timmy J., Silas M., Aiden S. and Coulter S. won the meet. Wooster Team D made up of Cora Hugon; Sawyer Shamie; Caspar Halene and Leander Halene came in second. 

January 26th was the 6th grade Academic Challenge meet with 19 teams from Colonel Crawford, Crestview, Galion, Lexington, Northmor, Plymouth-Shiloh, St. Mary’s, St. Peter’s, Shelby and Wooster. Wooster Team A won the meet. Team members were Eli Dean, Nόemi Bokrossy, Andrew James, Josiah Sexton. The runner-up was Crestview A with members Carter Blum, Titus Kelley, Zoe Kuhn.

Finally, thirty-two 7/8th grade teams from Ashland, Colonel Crawford, Crestview, Galion, Lexington, Madison, Mansfield, Mt. Gilead, Northmor, Sacred Heart, St. Mary’s, Shelby, Mansfield City’s Spanish Immersion, Tiffin and Wooster competed in their Academic Challenge meet on January 27th. Wooster Team A emerged as the winner with team members Brooklyn Chelakadan, Aaron Vandegrift, and Luci Dean, while Lexington Team A, made up of Owen G., Ben W., Addie S., Alex T., Tony P., Maddox L., placed second.
