In 2024, Mansfield Senior High School (MSHS) responded to a local need by launching a phlebotomy program, offering students valuable, career-focused training. The first class of 10 seniors, now certified phlebotomy technicians, reflects the school’s dedication to equipping students with practical skills while also supporting the community’s healthcare workforce.
Meeting Community Needs with Certified Excellence
The MSHS phlebotomy program was developed in response to a recognized shortage of qualified healthcare professionals in the Mansfield area. Aligning with the rigorous standards of the National Healthcare Association, the program offered a robust curriculum that not only covered the fundamentals of phlebotomy but also emphasized the importance of patient care, safety, and precision in healthcare settings.
A key component of the program was the 125-question certification exam, which all 10 students passed on their first attempt—a remarkable achievement that underscores the quality of education provided. Alongside their phlebotomy certification, these students also earned credentials in Basic Life Support (BLS), First Aid, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, and Stop-the-Bleed protocols. These additional certifications have equipped them with a comprehensive skill set that is highly valued in the medical field.
Hands-On Learning and Real-World Application
Beyond the classroom, MSHS ensured that students gained practical experience through paid work-based learning hours at local healthcare facilities, including Oak Grove Manor, Lexington Court, and The Good Shepherd. This real-world training was further enriched by a five-week clinical rotation at Avita, where students applied their skills in a professional healthcare setting.
The program also fostered leadership among its participants, with students leading Stop-the-Bleed and CPR sessions for other Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs at MSHS. This peer-led training not only reinforced the students’ own knowledge but also contributed to a culture of safety and preparedness throughout the school community.
Building a Foundation for Future Healthcare Professionals
The skills acquired through the MSHS phlebotomy program extend far beyond the technical aspects of blood collection. Students learned how to interact with patients in a compassionate and professional manner, a critical skill for healthcare providers. They were trained in the meticulous handling and labeling of specimens, a process essential for maintaining the integrity of samples and ensuring accurate test results. Additionally, the program emphasized the importance of infection control and the safe operation of phlebotomy equipment, instilling best practices that protect both patients and healthcare workers.
Perhaps most importantly, the program cultivated a deep attention to detail among its students. In the high-stakes environment of healthcare, where even minor errors can have significant consequences, this focus on accuracy and precision is invaluable.
A Bright Future Ahead
The success of this program is evident not only in the 100% employment rate among its graduates but also in the aspirations these young professionals hold. All participating seniors have expressed plans to continue their education or pursue additional healthcare certifications. The phlebotomy program has not just provided these students with a job; it has given them a solid foundation for a lifelong career in healthcare.
As the demand for skilled healthcare workers continues to grow, programs like the one at MSHS will play an increasingly vital role in preparing the next generation of professionals. By equipping students with both the technical skills and the practical experience they need, MSHS is not just meeting a community need—it is shaping the future of healthcare in Mansfield.
