Students attending The Ohio State University at Mansfield have the opportunity to make a foreign country a part of their educational experience.

Studying abroad encourages students to step out of their comfort zones and experience a new culture. Rachel Harper, a sophomore health sciences major at The Ohio State University at Mansfield, chose to travel to Japan for her study abroad experience.

“I love traveling. While I was on a tour at the Columbus campus, I learned about the possibility of studying abroad,” Harper explained.

During 2017-18, eight students from Ohio State Mansfield studied abroad. Across all of the Ohio State campuses, 3,176 students participated in the program. Ninety-seven of those students traveled to Japan.

Harper says her decision on a destination was an easy one to make. She said, “I really like Japanese anime. That helped encourage me to go overseas and experience a different culture.”

At Ohio State Mansfield, you have the opportunity to gain an education abroad experience by taking classes through an exchange program or foreign university, complete an independent study or service-learning project, conduct research, or participate in an internship program.

Harper encourages any student interested in the program to take advantage of the opportunity. “It’s a life-changing experience, and everyone should do it at least once,” she said. “There are also a lot of ways to get funding for it.”

Ohio State students receiving financial aid may be able to apply that funding towards a study abroad program. Students must first be accepted into the education abroad program through the Office of International Affairs before aid eligibility can be determined. Ohio State Mansfield students can also apply for travel grants on the Mansfield campus.

“Make sure you have everything planned out and done early.” Harper encourages. “You will want to prepare for purchasing the plane tickets, getting your passport, and saving for any other money you may want to take along.”

“It’s an opportunity I would definitely do again,” Harper said.

What are the requirements?

At a minimum, students must meet the following eligibility criteria in order to apply for a study abroad program that is managed by the Office of International Affairs.

  • Must be a degree-seeking, Ohio State student who will graduate no less than one term after the study abroad program concludes. Students who participate in May session programs can graduate at the end of the summer term in August, in most cases.
  • Must have a 2.0 or higher, must not have a current record action of “Warning,” “Probation,” or “Probation by Special Action.”
  • Must be in good disciplinary standing as described below.
  • Students who are under the age of 18 at any time of application process, admission process or their study abroad program must have a parent/guardian sign all forms requiring a signature as part of the application, admission and participation process. Students should notify their study abroad coordinator of their status and appropriate forms will be provided to the parent/guardian.

Specific programs may have additional eligibility requirements. Students must also maintain eligibility after being accepted into a study abroad program.
