UPDATED — Thursday at 10:00 p.m. See below.

For the keen observer, this is the seventh installment in our series “Literary Mansfield,” in which 1812Blockhouse looks at authors, poets, and other literary figures with a north central Ohio connection through birth and/or residence.

In this special edition, we are looking at another way in which certain authors manifest a Mansfield connection – in this case, by coming to town and participating in events at our independent bookstore, Main Street Books. Over the next three days, the store – located at 104 North Main Street in the heart of downtown – will host the following authors and events:

Thursday, November 3 – 6:00 PM — A reading of “The Autobiography of Brutus Buckeye” with his mother/author Sally Lanyon.

According to the event website, “It’s normally good practice to steer clear of people who are nuts. But not in this case.” Lanyon’s work is the story of the incomparable Brutus Buckeye, the nut-head-shaped icon of all things at The Ohio State University. Over the last 41 years, Brutus has evolved, been kidnapped, and experienced all sorts of adventures. Hear about the life of your favorite college mascot from someone who has known him very well.

Friday- November 4 – 6:00 PM — Book Talk with James Renner

Main Street Books shares, “James Renner is mostly known for his true-crime journalism. As a reporter for Cleveland Scene, he uncovered new clues and suspects in the cold-case murder of Amy Mihaljevic. His work led to the successful closure of the Tina Harmon case in 2009. He spent months researching the Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus abductions when the girls were still missing and is haunted by the fact that he had Castro’s name in his notes. His true crime writing has been featured in the Best American Crime Reporting anthology. In 2012, Renner’s debut novel was published. Set in Northeast Ohio, The Man from Primrose Lane blends mystery with sci-fi in a very unique structure. Renner has published two books recently — a novel called The Great Forgetting (Nov 2015) and a memoir titled, True Crime Addict (May 2016).”

Friday’s Book Talk features a fiction work by Renner, The Great Forgetting, as well as his non-fiction autobiographical book, True Crime Addict.

Saturday, November 5 – 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM — Cosmic Egg for President

A joyous celebration of the sparkly weird. Meet artist Lucas Hargis and maybe even get your Tarot cards read! Don’t want to spoil the show but: handmade coloring books, interactive/tactile pieces, space-time, birds, eggs & shine. Lucas’ show will be up through the holidays.
