The Women’s Fund of the Richland County Foundation has continued its dedication to the community, awarding $71,216 in grants at a recent luncheon, where they also celebrated the remarkable efforts of Suzanne Allen with the JoAnn Dutton Volunteer Community Service Award. These grants are part of the Women’s Fund’s longstanding commitment to enhancing economic security, health, and safety for women in Richland County.

Strengthening Childcare for Economic Security

For the sixth consecutive year, the Women’s Fund has emphasized affordable and accessible childcare, recognizing its crucial role in women’s economic stability. This year’s $25,000 grant to the YWCA of Northwest Ohio will support in-home childcare providers and centers, allowing them to apply for grants up to $2,500. These funds will assist with essential resources and professional development, ensuring Richland County families have access to quality childcare that enables women to pursue their careers with confidence.

“We know childcare is a foundation for women’s economic security,” a Women’s Fund spokesperson shared. “By investing in affordable options, we support families and the local workforce.”

Addressing Community Needs with Diverse Grants

In addition to childcare, the Women’s Fund has awarded grants to a range of organizations addressing critical community needs. Each recipient works toward empowering women, children, and families across Richland County:

  • The Domestic Violence Shelter received funds to improve electrical services in rooms and add mini refrigerators, enhancing the safety and comfort of its residents.
  • Music Academy of Karate and Empowerment was awarded support for a self-defense class, aiming to empower women with essential skills for personal safety.
  • North Central State College Foundation will expand its Child Development Center with an essentials and wellness program, supporting students and staff with young children.
  • Planned Parenthood received a grant to increase access to contraceptive services, helping women gain greater control over their reproductive health.
  • Project One was supported to provide a five-day grace stay for women and children escaping human trafficking situations, offering immediate refuge and support.
  • Renaissance Theatre plans to use its funds to install a lactation pod, creating a private space for nursing mothers among patrons and staff.
  • Richland Public Health will expand its infant car seat distribution program, promoting safety for young families.
  • Shelby Diaper Pantry received assistance to distribute diapers to local families in need, addressing a fundamental necessity for children.
  • Third Street Family Health Services will implement a mobile fresh food program to serve new and expecting mothers, promoting nutrition and well-being.

Since its inception in 1998, the Women’s Fund has granted $617,240 across 333 projects, reaching thousands of lives in Richland County. Each grant underscores the Fund’s vision of a community where women have the resources, support, and opportunities they need to thrive.

Celebrating Suzanne Allen, Community Service Champion

The JoAnn Dutton Volunteer Community Service Award, named after the former Mansfield YWCA director, honors a woman who has significantly impacted local charities. This year’s honoree, Suzanne Allen, was recognized for her invaluable volunteer work at The Domestic Violence Shelter. Known for her compassionate response to sexual assault cases, Allen assists survivors at Avita and OhioHealth hospitals, offering immediate support and comfort in difficult moments.

Beyond her direct support work, Allen is a staunch advocate for policy change. Drawing from her experiences, she lobbies for legislative reforms aimed at improving services for sexual assault survivors on both local and national stages. Her dedication embodies the spirit of the JoAnn Dutton Award, showcasing how one individual’s commitment can drive lasting change.
