The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging is hosting a special event in honor of National Falls Prevention Awareness Week, inviting people of all ages to join the “10 Million Steps to Prevent Falls” walk on Wednesday, September 25 in Lexington. This event, aimed at raising awareness about fall prevention, is a great way to engage in healthy activity while supporting an important cause.

A Walk for Everyone

The community walk will take place along the scenic B&O Bike Trail between 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM, offering participants the freedom to start at any time during these hours. Whether you’re an early bird or prefer to take your time, you can walk as much or as little as you like. With free parking available at the Lexington Senior Center at 64 East Main Street, Lexington, the event is easily accessible, with the walk officially beginning at Y-Not Cycle & Fitness nearby.

To make the walk more inclusive, participants can also rent bikes or adaptive riding equipment at Y-Not Cycle & Fitness for a small fee, making this event perfect for individuals of all mobility levels. Regardless of how many steps you take, every step contributes to Ohio’s goal of preventing falls and improving health among older adults.

Falls: A Serious but Preventable Risk

Falls are a serious health risk for Ohioans over the age of 60, with one in three individuals experiencing a fall each year. However, falls are not inevitable. Regular physical activity, such as walking, can significantly reduce the risk of falls. That’s why the Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging and the Ohio Department of Aging have organized this annual walk, as part of their statewide “10 Million Steps to Prevent Falls” initiative.

The walk is designed not only to raise awareness but also to encourage healthy habits that can help prevent falls. Walking is one of the simplest and most effective ways to maintain balance, strength, and overall health. As a part of this initiative, participants are urged to take as many steps as they can throughout September.

Wellness Programs and Gifts

The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging will have representatives at the event to share information about fall prevention and the many wellness programs they offer. It’s a perfect opportunity to learn about classes, transportation services, and other support available to older adults in the community. All participants in the walk will receive a free walking-related gift as a token of appreciation for their efforts in promoting fall prevention.

At the end of the event, all the steps taken will be submitted to the Ohio Department of Aging as part of the larger effort to reach the goal of 10 million steps statewide.

How to Join the Movement

No registration is required for this event. Simply show up between 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM on September 25, ready to walk! In the event of rain, however, the walk will be canceled. For additional information about the event or fall prevention classes, call Sue at 567-247-6458.

The Importance of Falls Prevention Awareness

National Falls Prevention Awareness Week serves as a reminder that falls are a major cause of injury and death among older adults, yet most falls can be prevented with the right actions. Beyond physical activity, ensuring a safe home environment, regular check-ups, and staying informed on ways to maintain health can make a big difference.

The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging works tirelessly to provide leadership and services that support independence and dignity for older adults, people with disabilities, and their caregivers. Their mission is to collaborate with local resources to enhance the lives of individuals and ensure they remain safe and healthy in their communities.
