Spring in Ohio brings fresh opportunities for anglers as the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife releases 85,000 rainbow trout across 90 locations, including Richland County’s Malabar Farm State Park Inn Pond. The highly anticipated stocking promises an exciting fishing experience for both seasoned anglers and newcomers looking to reel in their first catch of the season.
Expanding Opportunities for Anglers
The ODNR strategically selects stocking locations to maximize accessibility and ensure high catch rates. This year’s schedule includes new additions such as Stoner Pond and Starr Lake in Lucas County, as well as Wingfoot Wildlife Area in Portage County. With stockings running from mid-March through May, anglers across the state have plenty of opportunities to enjoy Ohio’s thriving fishing scene.
For a complete list of release locations and dates, anglers can visit ohiodnr.gov/troutstockings. Given Ohio’s unpredictable spring weather, updates on trout releases can also be accessed by calling 1-800-WILDLIFE (1-800-945-3543).
Special Events and Youth-Only Fishing
Certain trout stocking locations will feature special events, including youth-only fishing opportunities. State park youth ponds, including those at select stocking locations, will be reserved exclusively for children aged 15 and under for the first seven days after the release. After this initial week, all ages can fish these waters through the end of April, but beginning May 1, these ponds will revert to youth-only fishing for the remainder of the year.
What to Expect from Stocked Trout
Rainbow trout stocked by the ODNR measure between 10 and 13 inches long and are raised at Ohio’s state fish hatcheries. These coldwater fish are particularly sensitive to temperature changes, meaning they are best caught within two weeks of their release before Ohio’s waters warm up in late spring.
Since these stockings are designed to offer immediate fishing success, anglers should check Ohio’s 2025-26 fishing regulations before heading out. The daily limit for rainbow trout is five per angler, ensuring plenty of fish for all participants.
Fishing Licenses and Conservation Efforts
Ohio fishing regulations require anglers aged 16 and older to have a valid fishing license when fishing in public waters. The ODNR offers an annual fishing license for $25, valid for one year from the date of purchase, as well as a one-day license for $14. The one-day license can also be credited toward an annual license if anglers choose to upgrade. Licenses are available for purchase online at wildohio.gov, through the HuntFish OH app, and at participating sales agents.
Funding from fishing license sales, along with contributions from the federal Sport Fish Restoration program, plays a crucial role in conservation efforts. Anglers who purchase fishing gear, fish finders, and motorboat fuel contribute to an excise tax, which supports fish stocking programs, habitat preservation, and fishing access improvements across the state.
Richland County’s Stocking Date
For those in Richland County eager to cast their lines, the rainbow trout stocking at Malabar Farm State Park Inn Pond is scheduled for April 25. This serene and picturesque location is a favorite among local anglers and offers a perfect setting for a day of fishing.
With spring just around the corner, now is the time to prepare for an exciting fishing season. Whether you’re an experienced angler or trying trout fishing for the first time, Ohio’s stocked lakes and ponds offer a rewarding and family-friendly outdoor adventure.
