On April 9, the Richland Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) will welcome high school students from across 17 counties to compete in the Area 2 Envirothon. The event will be held at the Cooke Family Wildlife Conservation Park, located at 4774 State Route 13, Shiloh.
The Envirothon is more than just a competition—it’s a hands-on educational experience that strengthens students’ knowledge and appreciation for the environment. Participants will test their expertise in soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology, and current environmental issues, all while engaging in team-based decision-making and problem-solving.
Teamwork and Competition
Each team consists of five students from the same high school. While every team member contributes their own knowledge and skills, it’s the overall team score that determines success. An adult advisor or advisors must accompany each team, though they are not allowed to assist during the competition.
The Envirothon is designed to challenge students while fostering cooperation, critical thinking, and an understanding of natural resource management—valuable skills for future conservationists, scientists, and environmental leaders.
A Rare Opportunity for Richland County
Every county in Ohio has its own Soil & Water Conservation District, and the state is divided into five areas. Area 2 covers Northeast Ohio, including 17 counties. The privilege of hosting the event rotates among these counties, meaning this is a special opportunity for Richland County to showcase its natural resources and conservation efforts.
Community support is key to making the Envirothon a success. Richland SWCD is seeking sponsors and volunteers for the April 9 event. Businesses, organizations, and individuals who want to contribute to environmental education can help make this competition an unforgettable experience for students.
If you’re interested in sponsoring or volunteering, reach out to the Richland SWCD office at (419) 747-8686 or email [email protected].
This event is not just a competition—it’s an investment in the future of environmental stewardship. Don’t miss the chance to support the next generation of conservation leaders.
