National Adoption Month, observed every November across the United States, raises awareness about the thousands of children in foster care awaiting permanent homes. Richland County Children Services (RCCS) joins this nationwide initiative, celebrating the families formed through adoption while spotlighting the continued need for adoptive families. This year’s theme, “Honoring Youth: Strengthening Pathways to Lasting Bonds,” emphasizes the critical importance of community and family support in shaping secure, lifelong connections.

A National Movement Rooted in History

The observance of National Adoption Month began as “Adoption Week” in 1976, an initiative by Massachusetts Governor Mike Dukakis to raise awareness of children in foster care. This localized effort quickly gained national recognition, and in 1984, President Ronald Reagan officially established National Adoption Week. The observance expanded to encompass the full month of November in 1995 under President Bill Clinton, reflecting the growing emphasis on community activities, legal finalizations, and campaigns celebrating adoption.

As part of National Adoption Month, National Adoption Day, held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, allows courts nationwide to finalize adoptions and officially welcome new families. This celebration is a testament to the enduring impact of adoption, both in Richland County and across the United States, as children find stability, love, and support.

Strengthening Pathways to Lasting Bonds

This year’s theme acknowledges the critical need for relational permanency and a sense of belonging for youth in foster care. For many young people, the adoption journey is transformative but can also present unique challenges, particularly for those with a history of trauma or neglect. RCCS has made notable strides in 2024, finding permanent homes for 24 children, but there are still 18 children in the county awaiting adoption, along with 124 more in the foster care system. With over 3,000 children across Ohio still hoping for a forever home, the focus this year is on building meaningful relationships that can last a lifetime.

Richland County Children Services encourages interested community members to consider fostering or adoption. This journey, while life-changing, requires patience, compassion, and resilience. RCCS provides comprehensive resources, support networks, and guidance for families ready to make a positive difference.

Voices from All Sides: Challenges, Realities, and Support in Adoption

While National Adoption Month celebrates the joy of creating new families, there is also a growing movement to address the complex emotional landscape for adoptees. Adoptees’ voices, amplified through initiatives like #FlipTheScript since 2014, have brought attention to issues of identity, loss, and belonging. This conversation underscores that adoption isn’t solely about uniting families but also about recognizing the emotional nuances and lifelong impact on the children involved.

In response, RCCS emphasizes ongoing support for adoptive families, including counseling and resources that address trauma and emotional health. Richland County Children Services also works closely with adoptive parents to create secure environments where children can thrive emotionally and psychologically, recognizing the unique needs and experiences of each child.

How to Get Involved in National Adoption Month

National Adoption Month provides various ways for individuals to support children in need of family connections:

  • Attend local events: Communities often host adoption ceremonies and campaigns, celebrating new families and raising awareness.
  • Share adoption stories: Personal stories help dispel misconceptions about adoption and foster a supportive environment.
  • Support adoption and foster organizations: Donations and volunteer work with local services like RCCS can make a meaningful difference.
  • Consider fostering or adopting: Those ready to open their homes to children in need can begin their journey with RCCS, providing vital support and love.

In Richland County, those interested in adoption or fostering can contact Richland County Children Services at 419-774-4100 for more information or visit the RCCS website. RCCS welcomes all prospective parents—whether single, married, or divorced—and supports them through the background check process and beyond.
