Jason Mullins will never forget the moment he walked out of OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit after waking up in a hospital bed four months earlier, unable to move.
“That was a memory that in my life I will never, ever forget,” said Mullins, a former rehabilitation patient at Mansfield Hospital.
Doctors, nurses, and physical therapists lined the hallway as Mullins walked out, cheering and clapping him on.
It was a long road to recovery for Mullins.
A Covid diagnosis in November of 2021 led to blood clots in his lungs. While he was briefly released from the hospital, he returned even worse, going on a ventilator for 28 days, while also going into septic shock.
Mullins woke up in late December. While it was a Christmas miracle for his family, it felt like a nightmare for him.
“I had no idea what was going to happen to me,” said Mullins. “I had no idea what my body would do, whether I’d be in a facility for the rest of my life.”
Unable to move his left leg, Mullins entered rehab starting from zero.
Day after day, Mullins worked with physical therapists to get stronger. While the physical rehab was grueling, nurses and therapists focused just as much on Mullin’s mental improvement.
“These guys up here would make you smile in the morning,” said Mullins. “And it’s like, I wanted to get out there and do something. I wanted to be moving and do what I needed to do to be normal.”
Fast forward to today, Mullins was able to greet some of his old nurses and therapists at Mansfield Hospital.
He’s able to walk with a limp, but still unable to feel anything in his foot.
He’s hopeful he’ll still regain some mobility, but is thankful for the miraculous progress he’s made and the team that helped him get there.
