The latest edition of The Loop, the Ohio Department of Transportation’s video magazine, covers crucial transportation updates and challenges. Hosted by Matt Bruning and Renee DeFord, The Loop provides a comprehensive look at ongoing projects and initiatives aimed at improving Ohio’s transportation infrastructure.

New Diverging Diamond Interchange Underway in Hancock County

Construction has begun on a new diverging diamond interchange (DDI) at the I-75 and County Road 99 interchange in Hancock County. This two-year project aims to improve safety and traffic flow in the area. DDIs are relatively new in the U.S., first introduced in the early 2000s. These interchanges may initially seem confusing as they require drivers to briefly switch to the opposite side of the road. However, they significantly enhance traffic management and safety.

What Makes DDIs Effective?

DDIs eliminate left turns against oncoming traffic and reduce the number of traffic signal phases, which decreases delays and improves sight distances for drivers. They can be built more quickly and cheaply than traditional interchanges, making them a cost-effective solution. Most importantly, DDIs reduce crashes by an average of 37% and decrease injury and fatal crashes by 54%.

For high-traffic areas, especially near major shopping corridors, DDIs provide a superior alternative to traditional interchanges, ensuring safer and more efficient travel.

Oversize Loads and Route Compliance

While Ohio sees a significant number of super loads moving through its roads, thousands of smaller, oversize loads also traverse the state daily, all requiring permits from ODOT’s special hauling permit section. Unfortunately, not all drivers adhere to their approved routes.

Recent Incident Highlights Compliance Importance

A recent incident in Medina County where a semi-truck hit an overpass at the US 42 and US 224 interchange underscores the importance of route compliance. The driver, who was off his approved route, caused significant damage to the bridge, leading to its closure. He faces charges for reckless operation, permit violation, and over-dimension, as well as for not having a required lead vehicle with a height detector.

This incident highlights the critical need for drivers of oversize loads to follow their permitted routes strictly to avoid such costly and dangerous accidents.

Ohio’s Ongoing Litter Problem

Despite widespread awareness that littering is illegal, a recent study found that 42% of Ohioans admitted to littering in the past 30 days. This issue has significant environmental impacts, with items like cigarette butts, plastic bags, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles taking years to decompose.

ODOT, along with contractors, incarcerated persons, and Adopt-A-Highway volunteers, spend thousands of hours each year cleaning up litter. Notably, the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s New Philadelphia Post recently cleaned up a two-mile stretch of US 250 in Tuscarawas County.

To support these efforts, ODOT encourages the public to participate in keeping Ohio beautiful by visiting transportation.ohio.gov/litter for more information on how to help.
