As Ohio embraces a new year, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) shared exciting updates in their latest episode of The Loop. From advances in roundabout safety to expanding electric vehicle infrastructure, the state is paving the way for a smarter, greener future.
The video can be viewed below.
Ohio Roundabouts Lead the Way in Road Safety
Roundabouts are transforming how Ohioans navigate their roads. At the recent Ohio Roundabouts Conference, hosted by ODOT’s Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) at the University of Toledo, experts highlighted the growing popularity of these intersections.
The conference brought together planners, engineers, and officials to discuss best practices in roundabout design and the importance of driver education. Known for reducing traffic collisions and fatalities, roundabouts are becoming a cornerstone of Ohio’s transportation safety strategy. Electric Vehicles Hit the Fast Lane
Ohio is charging ahead in its electric vehicle (EV) initiatives, with substantial progress on EV charging infrastructure. Over a year ago, ODOT opened its first federally funded fast-charging station under the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. Fast forward to today, and Ohio now boasts 17 operational stations, with 60 new ones completed in 2023 alone.
“Out of all NEVI-funded stations nationwide, Ohio is leading with nearly half of them,” said Santos Ramos, EV Infrastructure Expert at Drive Ohio.
The state anticipates receiving $140 million in NEVI funding by 2026 to further expand charging access along interstates and state routes. Drivers like Ed, a recent EV owner, are noticing the benefits:
“These stations ease range anxiety and make long-distance travel a breeze,” Ed shared while charging his truck.

Leadership Shifts and Milestones
ODOT celebrated leadership changes and recognitions heading into the new year:
- Pry Chow, Executive Director of Drive Ohio, joined the 2025 Board of Directors for the Intelligent Transportation Society of America. The organization focuses on innovative transportation technology and workforce development.
- Doug Groover stepped into the role of District 8 Deputy Director, following the retirement of Tammy Campbell. Groover’s career spans decades, including his time as Highway Management Administrator.
ODOT Workers Shine Off the Field
In a lighter highlight, two ODOT employees brought their expertise to the football field. Bruce Derald and Shane Neely officiated the Division 7 State Championship at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton. Their selection by the Ohio High School Athletic Association underscores the agency’s community involvement beyond transportation.
