The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging, Inc. hosted its Annual Meeting before Christmas at the Mid-Ohio Conference Center in Mansfield. Nearly 260 attendees, including service providers, board members, community partners, and dignitaries, gathered to celebrate the organization’s achievements and its 50th anniversary milestone.

A Strong Network of Support

The event, presided over by Chief Clinical Officer Diane Ramey and Board President Jason Painley, highlighted the agency’s 2024 accomplishments and its ongoing mission to meet the needs of older adults. Platinum Sponsors Mechanics Bank, Freedom Caregivers, and ES Consulting supported the meeting, with proceeds funding scholarships for students pursuing degrees or certifications in aging services.

Jason Painley emphasized the significance of the milestone, stating, “The 50th Anniversary of the Area Agency on Aging is a milestone that is not just a reflection of our past – it’s a celebration of the present and a commitment to the future.”

Leadership and Legacy

Chief Executive Officer Duana Patton, the agency’s third CEO since its founding, reflected on the organization’s growth and impact. Since taking on the role in 2006, Patton has guided the agency through expansions and program enhancements, solidifying its place as a vital resource for aging services in Ohio.

The meeting also spotlighted individuals and organizations making a difference in the community:

  • Project Collaboration Award: Richland County Regional Planning
  • Elected Official Award: Mayor Steven Schag of Shelby
  • Advocate of the Year Award: Margaret Ann Ruhl
  • Award of Excellence: Steve Andrews of the Metropolitan Housing Authority
  • AAA Hall of Fame Inductee: Doug McLarnan (posthumously)

Looking Ahead

The agency’s commitment to addressing the needs of older adults remains steadfast. By supporting future leaders in aging services through scholarships and strengthening partnerships with local organizations, the Area Agency on Aging is poised to continue its legacy of service.
