The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is proud that Malabar Farm State Park and Barkcamp State Park have been selected as featured sites on the newly launched “Ohio Creativity Trail.” This exciting initiative, part of America 250-Ohio’s Trails & Tales program, was unveiled recently at the Toledo Museum of Art Glass Pavilion. The trail highlights 109 sites across the state, celebrating Ohio’s remarkable contributions to literature, music, visual arts, folk traditions, and more.

“Ohio’s state parks are rich in history, culture, and creative influence,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “From the literary legacy of Louis Bromfield at Malabar Farm to the artistry of Harley Warrick’s iconic barn paintings at Barkcamp, these sites reflect Ohio’s deep creative roots. We are honored to have them included in this special trail that showcases our state’s artistic heritage.”

The Ohio Creativity Trail is the second of six planned thematic trails designed to highlight Ohio’s cultural impact as part of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. Malabar Farm State Park is recognized in the On the Page category for its association with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louis Bromfield, a pioneering conservationist and screenwriter who made the farm his home. Visitors can explore his legacy through preserved writings and exhibits.

Barkcamp State Park is featured in the Folk and Traditional Art category, honoring Harley Warrick, the Belmont County native who painted more than 20,000 Mail Pouch Tobacco barns across the country. The antique barn at Barkcamp is a stunning example of his work, preserving a piece of Ohio’s artistic and agricultural heritage.

The Ohio Creativity Trail offers visitors an engaging, multimedia experience, allowing them to explore different artistic themes across six categories, from carousels and pottery to music and literature. The trail aims to inspire curiosity and appreciation for Ohio’s creative legacy, bringing Ohio’s artistic heritage to life.

In addition to being part of the Ohio Creativity Trail, ODNR supports Arts in the Parks, which is a collaboration with the Ohio Arts Council. Arts in the Parks programs celebrate the interconnectedness of arts and nature, providing new ways for people to enjoy Ohio State Parks.
