The Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, a staple of motorsport in central Ohio, has wrapped up an extensive series of improvements to enhance both track safety and spectator experience. The project, led by Green Savoree Racing Promotions, marks the first major track alterations since 1989 and underscores a continued investment in the future of the Lexington-based venue.
Major Enhancements to Turn 4 and Track Safety
One of the key areas of focus was Turn 4, situated at the start of the challenging “Esses” turns. Kokosing Construction Company led the modification, reducing the banking from 4 to 2 degrees to improve safety while maintaining the original apex curbing. The area underwent significant reconstruction, including:
- Removal of 520 feet of track surface
- Excavation of up to 18 inches along the outer edge
- Installation of new underdrains, aggregate base, and high-performance asphalt
Improved drainage was another major priority. The project added five catch basins and 1,370 feet of drainage pipes, including a 24-inch pipe to redirect water behind the Turn 4 runoff area. The runoff itself was reshaped and elevated, with 500 repurposed concrete blocks and track millings used to create maintenance access roads.
Upgraded Safety Barriers and Infrastructure
To further enhance driver and spectator safety, 5,300 feet of guardrails and fencing were installed in key areas, including the front and back straights and the Turn 4 complex. This replaced aging concrete barriers and fencing, modernizing the course for upcoming racing seasons.
Facility Improvements for Fans and Competitors
Spectator and competitor access also received attention, with over 201,000 square feet of access roads repaved. Key routes, such as the road leading through Gate #1 and into the paddock areas, were resurfaced to improve durability and ease of movement. Additional improvements included:
- Repaving the road between the middle and upper paddocks
- Resurfacing the false grid road and pavement around the Operations Building
These updates ensure a smoother experience for visitors, whether attending one of Mid-Ohio’s iconic racing events or participating in private track activities.
A Collaborative Effort with Local Expertise
The upgrades were a collaborative effort involving multiple Ohio-based organizations. Kokosing Construction and Kokosing Materials spearheaded the construction work, while Arcadis contributed design and engineering expertise. Dallara’s race testing simulations were instrumental in refining track modifications. Green Savoree Racing Promotions also credited The National Bank of Indianapolis for financial services.
Kevin Savoree, co-owner and COO of Green Savoree Racing Promotions, praised the collaborative effort:
“We’d like to thank all our partners…for their expertise and excellent work. We look forward to welcoming competitors and fans back to the property in the spring!”
Looking Ahead to the 2025 Racing Season
Mid-Ohio’s 2025 schedule promises a full slate of motorsport action, including the annual NTT INDYCAR SERIES race weekend, MotoAmerica Superbikes, and IMSA sports car events. Public sales for season race passes and tickets begin on January 8, 2025, with free general admission for children 12 and under when accompanied by a ticketed adult.
