Governor Mike DeWine, Lt. Governor Jon Husted, and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik have announced over $52 million in funding for brownfield remediation and building demolition projects across Ohio. The Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program and Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program aim to create opportunities for new development in areas hindered by contamination or vacant structures.

Richland County Receives Funding

Richland County is one of the many beneficiaries of this new funding. The County Land Bank will receive $120,700 to remediate the former dry-cleaning site, Swan Cleaners, on Park Avenue West in Mansfield. This project will specifically focus on cleaning up contaminated groundwater that has long been a barrier to redevelopment. By addressing these environmental concerns, the site can be prepared for future use, opening up new possibilities for community growth and investment.

Statewide Brownfield and Demolition Projects

Statewide, the Ohio Brownfield Remediation grants announced in this sixth round total over $29 million, which will go towards redeveloping 36 hazardous sites across 23 counties. One of the most notable projects receiving funding is the former Terrace Plaza Hotel in Cincinnati. Nearly $10 million has been allocated to remediate and redevelop this historic building, which will be transformed into a vibrant mixed-use hub featuring residential apartments, retail spaces, restaurants, and a public parking garage. The Terrace Plaza Hotel redevelopment is expected to breathe new life into Cincinnati’s Central Business District and become a catalyst for further urban revitalization.

Since the start of the Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program, over $490 million has been awarded for 462 projects in 84 counties. These projects have focused on transforming hazardous sites into valuable properties that contribute to economic growth, improve the environment, and enhance communities across the state. By addressing contaminated properties, the program not only supports public health and safety but also provides a foundation for future development and job creation.

Additionally, $23.3 million in funding will support the demolition of 292 vacant buildings in nine counties. The Ohio Demolition and Site Revitalization grants target properties that have become eyesores and potential hazards. One notable project includes the demolition of a former student housing facility on Capital University’s campus in Bexley. Removing these dilapidated buildings will clear the way for future development, reduce crime, and enhance the overall appearance of neighborhoods.

Ohio BUILDS Initiative

These programs are part of Governor DeWine’s Ohio BUILDS Initiative, which focuses on enhancing quality of life by improving infrastructure, expanding broadband, and eliminating blighted properties. Ohio BUILDS aims to create new economic opportunities by removing barriers to progress.
