Mansfield’s long-awaited Main Street transformation is officially in motion. City officials and contractors gathered this week for a pre-construction meeting, signaling the final preparations before work begins on the ambitious downtown revitalization project. With utility work already underway, construction crews led by Kokosing are set to begin replacing water lines in early March.

While the improvements will bring lasting benefits to the community, temporary disruptions are expected. Officials are urging residents to continue supporting downtown businesses during the construction period. For those looking to navigate downtown efficiently, the city has a traffic tip:
🟢 Take Mulberry Street when heading south.
🟢 Take Diamond Street when heading north.
Traffic lights on these streets are synchronized to stay green—as long as drivers maintain the speed limit.

Here’s a closer look at what the Main Street Mansfield Project will bring to the city.

A Major Step Forward for Downtown Mansfield

The Main Street Mansfield Project is a transformative initiative designed to enhance economic vitality, walkability, and downtown aesthetics. Covering 0.6 miles from First Street to Fifth Street, the project includes key landmarks such as Richland Carrousel Park and Central Park.

Scheduled to officially launch in early 2025, the project is expected to take approximately 18 months to complete.

What’s Changing?

One-Way to Two-Way Traffic

One of the biggest shifts will be the conversion of Main Street from one-way to two-way traffic, improving accessibility for both residents and businesses.

Upgraded Streetscape and Public Spaces

The project will introduce:
New sidewalks and ADA-compliant curb ramps
Decorative brick crosswalks for safer pedestrian movement
Improved street lighting for enhanced visibility
Greenery and landscaped plant beds
Modern street furniture for a more inviting atmosphere

Renovations to Central Park and District Enhancements

🌳 Central Park will see new seating, fountains, and restored monuments.
🎡 Carrousel District & Brickyard Entertainment District will benefit from better pedestrian crossings, lighting, and curb extensions.
🏛 Historic-style decorative arches will mark key entry points downtown.

Safety & Connectivity Improvements

🚶 Mid-block pedestrian crossings
🚧 Traffic calming measures
🚴 Bike-friendly routes and better parking integration

Project Funding and Timeline

The project’s $7.4 million budget comes from:

  • Local funds, including PRIDE tax revenue
  • State grants from the Ohio Public Works Commission
  • Federal RAISE grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation

With construction launching in early 2025 and completion expected within 18 months, the project is part of a broader effort stemming from the 2019 Mansfield Rising Downtown Investment Plan.

What This Means for Mansfield

Once completed, the revitalized Main Street is expected to:
Attract new businesses and increase economic activity
Encourage foot traffic and boost tourism
Balance historic preservation with modern infrastructure

While orange barrels and detours may test drivers’ patience, the long-term benefits promise a vibrant, walkable downtown. Officials assure residents that “The new Main Street is loading now.”
