As winter tightens its grip on Ohio, Kingwood Center Gardens is inviting visitors to step into a warm, tropical paradise with Winter’s Interlude, a stunning orchid exhibition now on display through March 7. Featuring more than 250 orchids, along with air plants and tropical foliage, the exhibit transforms the Orangery in the Display Greenhouse into an exotic retreat filled with vivid colors and enchanting fragrances.

A Dazzling Orchid Display from Across the Globe

Winter’s Interlude showcases both common and rare orchid species, carefully curated to bring an extraordinary floral experience to visitors. Some of these breathtaking orchids have been sourced from as far as Hawaii, offering a unique opportunity to see varieties that might otherwise be difficult to encounter in the region.

Designed to be an immersive escape from the gray, chilly weather, this exhibit provides the perfect respite for those looking to embrace a little warmth and natural beauty during the cold months.

Caring for Orchids During Winter

For orchid lovers inspired by the exhibit, maintaining these delicate flowers through the winter months requires some specialized care. Orchids thrive when their natural tropical habitat is mimicked, even indoors. Here are some key tips for keeping orchids healthy during winter:

  • Temperature Management: Orchids prefer a consistent temperature between 60-75°F, avoiding cold drafts from windows or doors.
  • Lighting: With shorter days and less natural sunlight, orchids may benefit from a grow light to maintain their blooming cycle.
  • Humidity & Watering: Dry winter air can stress orchids, so keeping a humidity level around 50-70% with a small humidifier or pebble tray can help.
  • Choosing the Right Orchid: Beginner-friendly varieties like Phalaenopsis (moth orchids) are more adaptable to indoor conditions and require less maintenance.

By adjusting their care seasonally, orchid enthusiasts can enjoy year-round blooms and healthy growth.

Admission & Educational Programs

Winter’s Interlude is included with general admission to Kingwood Center Gardens. Ticket pricing is as follows:

  • $10 for non-members

Beyond the display, Kingwood Center Gardens offers educational programs on orchids for both children and adults, providing valuable insights into growing and maintaining these stunning plants at home.
