The Artistic Jazz Orchestra makes its premier appearance at the Renaissance Theatre this weekend. AJO Artistic Director, Paul Martin, has put together an evening of the group’s most popular numbers.

Martin is a native of Ashland and has studied with jazz legends like Vaughn Wiester (trombonist and arranger for Woody Herman) and Doug Richeson (bassist for Tony Bennett). He’s also performed with some of the finest jazz musicians in the country, includingLas Vegas vocalist/pianist George Bugatti, vocalist Cathi Muckle (the niece of Rosemary Clooney), trumpeter Bobby Shew, and drummer Louise Bellson.

The Artistic Jazz Orchestra will perform this weekend, July 10 at 8:30 PM under the stars of the Renaissance Backlot. The big band jazz ensemble is sure to be an explosive wall of sound as five saxophones, five trumpets, five trombones, a piano, bass and drums bring you the very best of jazz music.

The concert will feature some of the most famous jazz music from artists such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, and many more.

Many familiar musicians will also be featured including lead alto saxophonist, Thomas Reed, tenor saxophonist Bryan Olsheski, lead trumpeter Erik Gimbel and drummer Jim Rupp. And many local music lovers will recognize the superb vocals of Kelly Knowlton.

The AJO Backlot Concert will provide an evening of music, dancing, and fun you will not want to miss, whether you’re a die-hard big band jazz lover, searching for a perfect date night or just looking for a night out with friends and family.

Tickets are $10 per person. Drinks, concessions, and restrooms will be available inside the theater lobby before and during the concert. Food trucks such as Mad Meltz and Bobby & Cindy’s Sweet Treats will also be available. Concert goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, or other personal items for comfortable viewing. Drive-in viewing will also be available via the Backlot drive-in screen.
