Avita Health System has officially begun construction on its highly anticipated comprehensive cancer center at Avita South Campus in Ontario, Ohio. The $15 million, 22,000+ square-foot facility, located at 600 Richland Mall at the former Sears location, will bring cutting-edge oncology treatment to the region. This marks a major step forward in expanding local healthcare access and reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for specialized cancer treatment.

Transformative Technology in Development

The Avita Comprehensive Cancer Center will be equipped with the latest advancements in cancer treatment, including a state-of-the-art TrueBeam linear accelerator for precise and effective radiation therapy. Additionally, the facility will house a new PET/CT scanner, an advanced imaging system that allows specialists to detect cancer at its earliest stages, assess disease progression, and monitor treatment effectiveness. These technological advancements will be integrated into a comprehensive cancer care approach, ensuring that patients receive coordinated, high-quality care.

A Full-Service Cancer Treatment Facility Underway

Once completed, the center will feature medical and radiation oncology clinics, 16 infusion bays for chemotherapy treatment, a fully equipped lab, and a comprehensive pharmacy. The goal is to streamline patient care, allowing individuals to receive consultations, treatments, and follow-ups in a single location.

“This integrated approach ensures that patients receive coordinated care with all aspects of their treatment plan managed under one roof,” said Jerome Morasko, President/CEO of Avita Health System. “We are very excited to be able to bring local comprehensive cancer services to the community so that patients do not have to travel long distances to receive the care they need. In addition, we will still continue to provide the same high-quality medical oncology services at Galion and Bucyrus Hospitals as we always have.”

Local Builders and Architects Leading the Project

Avita Health System has enlisted trusted Ohio firms to lead the construction efforts. Adena Corporation, based in Mansfield, has been selected as the design-builder, while the Akron-based GPD Group is handling the architectural design.

“We are excited to be working again with these groups on another phase at our South Campus location,” said Kim Winkle, Vice President of Operations at Avita Health System. “While we added many new jobs already at this location this past year, we expect to add yet another 30+ this year as we continue to grow our services at this facility.”

Looking Ahead: Timeline and Completion

With construction now underway, Avita Health System anticipates opening the cancer center in late fall of 2025. As work progresses, the community will see continued developments at Avita South Campus, reinforcing the health system’s commitment to providing advanced, accessible healthcare to the region.

This milestone marks not only the beginning of a new medical facility but also a new chapter in the fight against cancer for North Central Ohio.
