The Richland Soil and Water Conservation District (Richland SWCD) invites the community to embrace a unique crafting experience at their next Conservation Creation Arts & Crafts Workshop on Tuesday, October 8 at 6:00 PM. Held at the picturesque Gorman Nature Center, 2295 Lexington Ave., Mansfield, this event will allow participants to create beautiful buckeye ornaments—perfect for displaying from fall through winter.

This workshop provides a hands-on opportunity to get creative with Ohio’s iconic state tree, the Buckeye. Attendees will use buckeye nuts and beads to craft personalized ornaments, blending natural elements with artistic flair. All necessary materials are included in the $12 registration fee, making it a convenient and affordable way to dive into a fun, nature-inspired craft. To secure your spot, reservations are requested by October 1.

For more information and to register, visit the Richland SWCD website here or call 419-747-8685.

Celebrating Ohio’s Buckeye Tree

Buckeyes hold a special place in Ohio’s cultural and natural heritage. Known for their smooth, shiny brown nuts with a light-colored spot, buckeye trees are symbolic of Ohio pride, even lending their name to Ohio State University’s beloved sports teams, the Buckeyes.

While these nuts may look appealing, they are actually inedible and poisonous, reminding us that not everything that glistens is good for snacking. Instead, Ohioans have transformed buckeyes into something sweet—literally. The popular buckeye candy, made of peanut butter and chocolate, mimics the appearance of the nut without the dangers, making it a delicious staple of holiday celebrations.

Buckeyes in Ohio’s Holiday Traditions

In Ohio, buckeyes are more than a festive candy; they’re a cherished symbol of family and holiday gatherings. Whether in the form of candy or ornaments, buckeyes capture the spirit of the season, bringing a touch of local heritage to every celebration. Crafting with buckeyes at workshops like the one hosted by Richland SWCD allows participants to connect with this cultural icon in a meaningful way.

These ornaments, crafted with care, serve as a reminder of the simple joys of nature, creativity, and community. Displaying them on your tree or mantel will not only add a rustic touch to your holiday decor but also keep you connected to Ohio’s rich natural landscape throughout the colder months.
