The Mansfield/Richland County Public Library invites the community to a vibrant and engaging Black History Celebration on Saturday, February 1 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Main Library. This annual event is a cornerstone of cultural reflection and community connection, featuring live entertainment, educational activities, and opportunities to win prizes while celebrating Black heritage and achievements.
A Chance to Win While You Explore
The Main Library is encouraging attendees to explore the 2nd-floor library departments — including the Sherman Room and Learning Lab — as well as booths hosted by community partners. Visitors can collect stamps on a “passport” for the chance to win one of two $50 Walmart gift cards.
Among the participating organizations are:
- First Call 211
- Mansfield Adult Education Cosmetology School, offering hair braiding demos in the TeenZone
- North End Community Improvement Collaborative (NECIC)
- NAACP
- Ohio State University-Mansfield
- Richland County Children’s Services
- Richland Public Health
Each group will provide engaging and educational resources, fostering a deeper understanding of local services and Black history in the community.
A Stellar Entertainment Lineup
The 2nd-floor lobby will transform into a hub of live performances, showcasing the talents and creativity of local artists. The entertainment schedule includes:
- 10:00 AM: Opening greeting by Chris May
- 10:15 AM: A choral performance by the Mansfield Choir
- 10:30 AM: A spoken word presentation by Josiah Kumai-Sanders
- 10:45 AM: Performances by the Richland Performing Arts Association
- 11:15 AM: A live hip-hop performance by VaunDoom
- 11:45 AM: A drumline performance by the Jesus Soldiers of Shiloh Baptist Church
- 12:00 PM: Poetry reading by Candace Johnson
Throughout the day, attendees can also enjoy studio-free henna tattoos provided by Enchanted Luna Henna in the Adult Reference Department.
Warm Lunch and Take-Home Options
Don’t miss the warm lunch catered by Glynis Hanney, available from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM in the Sherman Room on the 1st floor. This meal will provide attendees with a chance to refuel while continuing the celebration. For those on the go, take-out options will also be available.

This year’s Black History Celebration provides a platform to honor and learn about Black heritage while enjoying a wide array of activities and performances. From spoken word presentations to the energy of live drumlines, the event ensures that there is something for everyone to enjoy.
