On Saturday, April 19 at 8:00 AM the Richland County Park District invites bird lovers, nature enthusiasts, and early risers to a special spring edition of their Birds & Breakfast Bird Walk. This month’s event will take participants through the rivers and meadows of Fleming Falls, a serene spot located at 2294 Fleming Falls Rd, Mansfield in search of early spring migrants heading north.

Whether you’re a seasoned birder or simply looking to enjoy the fresh morning air, this walk offers a peaceful, educational, and scenic way to begin your weekend.

A Hotspot for Spring Migration

Richland County is known among Ohio birders as a prime destination for spotting spring migrants. The region’s diverse ecosystems—from wetlands and lakes to woodlands and meadows—make it an ideal resting and feeding ground for birds on their journey.

In early to mid-April, you may see:

  • Waterfowl like ducks, geese, and swans
  • Raptors such as Bald Eagles and Turkey Vultures
  • Songbirds like Eastern Meadowlarks and Song Sparrows
  • Thrushes and Wrens, including Hermit Thrushes and Winter Wrens
  • Yellow-rumped Warblers, often among the first warblers to appear

As the month progresses, keep an eye out for the more colorful arrivals:

  • Neotropical migrants including Black-and-white, Palm, and Nashville Warblers
  • Vireos, orioles, and White-throated Sparrows

Fuel Up with Friends at Pump and Grind

After the 1.5 to 2-hour walk, the group will head to Pump and Grind Restaurant at 586 Park Avenue East, to warm up and wind down with a hearty breakfast. It’s the perfect chance to share sightings, compare notes, and maybe plan your next birding adventure.

Birdwatching Tips for a Successful Outing

  • Arrive early: Birds are most active in the morning as they forage after long nocturnal flights.
  • Pack binoculars or a spotting scope for a better look at those fast-moving warblers.
  • Dress in layers: Spring mornings in Ohio can be chilly—be prepared!
  • Stay updated: Check local birding groups or online migration dashboards for sightings and tips.

Come for the Birds, Stay for the Community

Birds & Breakfast at Fleming Falls is more than a nature walk—it’s a community experience rooted in discovery, connection, and a shared appreciation for the wonders of spring migration. Don’t miss your chance to witness the changing season through the flutter of wings and the songs of returning birds.
