On Friday, Nov. 8, at 7:00 PM, the First Congregational Church at 640 Millsboro Rd. in Mansfield will welcome the Bowling Green State University (BGSU) Men’s Chorus, an esteemed ensemble often celebrated as “America’s Finest Singing Machine.” Known for its remarkable talent and longstanding tradition, the chorus comprises tenor and bass singers from across the university, including students from all seven colleges. This free-to-attend performance, which accepts free-will donations, will be a unique opportunity for Mansfield residents to enjoy one of Ohio’s most renowned collegiate choral groups.

About the BGSU Men’s Chorus

Founded in 1971, the BGSU Men’s Chorus has built a legacy of excellence in choral music, combining a diverse membership and a rigorous performance schedule. The ensemble includes 70 to 80 members from a variety of disciplines, with over half being non-music majors, which adds a rich blend of backgrounds and voices to the group. Open to all university-affiliated tenor and bass singers through auditions, the ensemble also occasionally welcomes BGSU faculty and staff who share a passion for choral music.

A Tradition of Excellence and Ambitious Touring

Rehearsing three times a week, the Men’s Chorus maintains a demanding schedule to prepare for its annual tours and numerous engagements. Each year, they embark on two major tours: a fall tour within Ohio and Michigan, and a spring tour that reaches across the United States and Canada. Recent tours have taken the group to notable locations such as New York City, Colorado, and Toronto, expanding the reach of BGSU’s musical legacy. This November, Mansfield will experience the vitality and precision of a group that has captivated audiences at prestigious events, including the American Choral Directors Association’s (ACDA) National Conference.

Celebrated Performances and Recordings

The BGSU Men’s Chorus regularly performs at state, regional, and national events, representing both the university and the state of Ohio on stages that showcase the best in choral music. Their recent highlight includes a performance at the 2023 ACDA National Conference in Cincinnati. In addition, the group is scheduled to perform at the 2025 Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Professional Development Conference in Cleveland, further solidifying its reputation within music education circles.

The ensemble has also recorded several CDs over the years, showcasing an impressive range of choral literature for male voices. Committed to expanding the repertoire, the Men’s Chorus frequently commissions works from prominent composers like Stacy Gibbs and the legendary jazz musician Dave Brubeck. These commissioned pieces, coupled with their dedication to performing a wide variety of choral works, make their performances a well-rounded and rich musical experience.

A Community of Music and Camaraderie

More than just a chorus, the BGSU Men’s Chorus fosters a deep sense of community and camaraderie among its members. These singers not only share their voices but also form bonds that transcend the performance space, making this ensemble a meaningful part of the BGSU experience. Their rigorous schedule and shared commitment to musical excellence create a unique environment that brings out the best in each member.

Residents of Mansfield and surrounding areas are encouraged to attend this extraordinary concert on November 8. Don’t miss the chance to witness firsthand the talent and dedication of BGSU’s acclaimed Men’s Chorus.
