This Saturday, September 28, the Autism Walk-A-Thon will once again be held at the Richland County Fairgrounds. The event is scheduled from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM; walking is optional and the event will feature arts and crafts, food, a bounce house, and performances by the Kids Party Dude and local dance group Flow Troupe.

There will also be informational tables to educate the public about autism, which is a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties with social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. Autism affects information processing in the brain by altering connections and organization of nerve cells and their synapses. Those with autism may experience social isolation, problems at school or work, family stress and bullying; no single treatment is best as treatment should be tailored to the individual. The local Walk-A-Thon is held not only to inform the public about autism, but also to raise funds that will be used to help local families.

Those attending are asked to pay a $10 donation at the door, or submit a pledge sheet with a pledge to raise a certain amount of money. Proceeds from the event will assist local families impacted by autism through various means, including paying for therapy, camps and transportation.
