Spring in Richland County means more than just blooming flowers and warmer weather — it also marks the return of a long-standing tradition for pond owners and outdoor enthusiasts. The Richland Soil and Water Conservation District’s Annual Pond Fish Sale is back, offering an opportunity to stock your pond with a wide variety of freshwater fish.

From Bluegill and Yellow Perch to Largemouth Bass, Channel Catfish, and even White Amurs, this sale supports both recreational and environmental goals. Whether you’re an angler or a steward of aquatic ecosystems, this event is a great way to enhance the vitality and balance of your pond.

Deadline to Order: April 17

Don’t let this opportunity swim away — orders must be placed by Wednesday, April 17, between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM. The Richland SWCD encourages customers to order online through their official shop or call the office to inquire about in-person ordering.

Available fish species include:

  • Bluegill
  • Hybrid Bluegill
  • Yellow Perch
  • Redear Bluegill
  • Largemouth Bass
  • Fathead Minnows
  • Channel Catfish
  • White Amurs (grass carp)

You can also purchase pond conditioner, Optimal Fish Food, and essential supplies like plastic bags and twist ties for safe transport.

Pickup Day: April 25 at the Fairgrounds

Fish pickup will take place on Thursday, April 25, from 10:00 to 11:30 AM at the Horse Barn on the Richland County Fairgrounds. To ensure the health and safety of your fish during transport, proper containers are essential.

Each container should:

  • Be a five-gallon bucket or similar vessel
  • Contain a 30-gallon unscented poly liner (trash bag)
  • Be filled one-third full with water from the pond where the fish will be released
  • Be closed with a twist tie or twine — not a lid

A good rule of thumb:

  • 1 container per 100 small fish
  • 1 container per 1,000 minnows
  • 1 container per 4-5 White Amurs

Customers are kindly asked to assist with loading and unloading their containers to help speed up the delivery process.

Reel In the Benefits of a Thriving Pond

Healthy ponds benefit not just landowners, but also the broader ecosystem. By introducing species like fathead minnows, which serve as a food source, or White Amurs, which help control vegetation, pond owners can cultivate a balanced, beautiful aquatic environment.

So whether you’re creating a family fishing spot or boosting your farm’s ecosystem, the Richland SWCD Fish Sale is the place to start.
