For bird enthusiasts and nature lovers, the return of What’s Up Duck is a welcome event, signaling the start of a season rich with feathered discoveries in North Central Ohio. Hosted by the Richland County Park District, this monthly bird walk offers a chance to observe a variety of waterfowl up close while exploring the scenic beauty of the Clearfork Reservoir.

On Saturday, March 15 participants will gather at Gorman Nature Center at 9:00 AM before venturing out to Lexington Ontario Road’s reservoir parking lot. The group will search for resident and migratory ducks, with potential sightings including Mallards, Wood Ducks, Canvasbacks, and the striking Red-breasted Merganser—the latter featured in the event’s promotional image.

North Central Ohio provides prime habitat for numerous duck species, from dabbling ducks that forage in the shallows to diving ducks that plunge beneath the water’s surface. Some key species to watch for include:

  • Dabbling Ducks: Mallards, American Black Ducks, Wood Ducks, and Blue-winged Teal, which skim the surface for food.
  • Diving Ducks: Redheads, Canvasbacks, and Lesser Scaup, known for their deep dives in search of aquatic plants and invertebrates.
  • Sea Ducks & Mergansers: Common, Hooded, and Red-breasted Mergansers, striking species with sharp, serrated bills adapted for catching fish.

The event will last between 1.5 to 2 hours, and while spotting scopes are encouraged, they are not required. Restrooms will be available at Picnic Area #2, providing a convenient stop for visitors.

Beyond the thrill of spotting elusive ducks, What’s Up Duck is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in nature, meet fellow birdwatchers, and gain insight into Ohio’s vibrant waterfowl populations. With spring migration on the horizon, this guided excursion offers a prime opportunity to witness both resident species and transient travelers passing through on their seasonal journey.

Whether you’re an experienced birder or just curious about the world of ducks, this event promises a morning of discovery and appreciation for the avian wonders that call Ohio home.
