UNITED WAY DONATION – The Ohio State University at Mansfield and North Central State College have collected a combined $8,976 for the Richland County United Way Campaign.

Mid-Ohio ESC Earns “High Performing ESC” Designation

Mid-Ohio ESC was recently named a “High Performing ESC” by the Ohio Department of Education.  This is the first year of the prestigious designation.

To earn the award, Mid-Ohio ESC demonstrated a savings of 21.4 percent for its 16 client districts in the areas of Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, School Psychology and Speech and Language Pathology services, as well as Executive Search services.

Mansfield Schools May Get Christmas Present: Release From Fiscal Emegency

Mansfield City Schools’ long and demanding journey through state-imposed fiscal emergency might – might – come to an end before Christmas.

The district’s Financial Planning and Supervision Commission, which included new member Teana Sykes, heard Tuesday that the Auditor of State’s office has initiated the process for terminating the fiscal emergency designation. Newman Elementary Demolition Progressing

Except for a chain-link security fence the front of the former Newman Elementary School on Central Avenue gave no indication Friday that demolition is underway. It’s a very different story in the back.

Great Lakes Demolition of Vickory, Ohio, has gutted several of the rooms on the west side. That work began after Total Environmental Services of Toledo completed abatement of hazardous materials. The building is expected to be demolished, debris removed and the site graded by mid-December. It will be restored to grass as weather permits. More…


Mansfield Schools Superintendent Warns Public Education In Trouble

Superintendent Brian Garverick said today public education’s role as “the foundation of the United States of America” is threatened by a proliferation of for-profit charter schools.

Garverick spoke to the 2016-17 Leadership Unlimited class of the Richland Area Chamber of Commerce during the class’s visit to Sherman Elementary School Thursday morning. As explained on the chamber’s web site, Leadership Unlimited is a 10-month learning program for men and women who have demonstrated leadership ability within the community. Ohio State Releases Enrollment Report; Reaches Record Number

The Ohio State University has released its annual enrollment report, covering both its main campus and its regional campuses including OSU Mansfield.

It its release, M. Dolan Evanovich, Vice President for Strategic Enrollment Planning, shared several overall statistics. Noting that the first year retention rate is now at 94.2%, the report said that the current Freshman class came into OSU with an 29.1 average ACT composite, and 63% in the top 10% of their high school class. Minority enrollment is also up – by some 11% to a total of 12,314 on all campuses. More…



Board Of Education Meeting Moved To November 22

The Mansfield City Schools Board of Education’s regular monthly meeting, usually the third Tuesday of the month, has been rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 22.

The meeting was moved back a week because board members and some administrators will attend the Ohio School Boards Association’s annual Capital Conference in the Columbus Convention Center early next week. More…

93 Middle School Students Honored For Academic Work

Books and computer screens gave way to cake and milk this past Wednesday afternoon as Mansfield Middle School honored 93 students who earned honor roll status for the first grading period. Twenty-one of them had all A’s.

“We are here to celebrate your academic success. We appreciate your hard work,” Principal Robert McQuate told seventh- and eighth-graders who filled the library. McQuate introduced each student individually as he presented honor roll certificates. Counselor Kathi Gorbett added certificates for a free Taco Bell taco and Tyger pencils. More…


Mansfield Schools Closed Friday; District Continues Plan Development

Students will not be in school on Friday as administrators and teachers meet in several different sessions during the third of five designated professional development days.

District Curriculum Director Stephen Rizzo, a former longtime elementary school principal, said sessions are scheduled from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM. “Our focus will be to maintain the momentum of our two previous professional development days as we discuss and develop strategies at both the building and district levels to achieve maximum student achievement,” Rizzo said.
