🗳️ Madison levy renewal could prevent deeper cuts
Published Wednesday: Madison Local Schools will ask voters November 3 to renew two existing property taxes totaling 14.4 mills for five years. Superintendent Rob Peterson said the renewal would not increase taxes.
The district expects to make about $300,000 in reductions even if the levy passes. Defeat would require another $1 million in cuts. Meanwhile, Madison’s state report-card rating improved from 3.5 to four stars, with five-star ratings for graduation and college, career, workforce and military readiness.
🎠 Bellville Street Fair opens today
The 176th Bellville Street Fair begins with an art show from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Rides and concessions open at 4:00 PM, followed by the rabbit show at 5:00 PM.
The Fair Queen Contest and livestock shows begin at 6:00 PM, and the Clear Fork High School Marching Band performs at 7:00 PM. With storms possible late in the day, visitors should watch for schedule changes. See the official fair schedule.
🏨 Downtown hotel purchase launches $10 million project
Tuesday carryover: A local investment group led by Mansfield entrepreneur Jay Goyal and hotelier Snehal Patel has completed its purchase of the Quality Inn & Suites at 116 Park Avenue West.
The hotel will remain open during renovations before reopening as the Hearth & Forge Hotel in summer 2027. Plans include larger rooms and suites, a restaurant and bar, meeting and banquet space, an indoor pool and other upgrades. Read the project announcement.
🏗️ Nine companies pursue West Park demolition contract
Tuesday carryover: Nine contractors submitted bids to demolish the former West Park Shopping Center. Proposals range from $896,845 to more than $3.2 million.
R&D Excavating of Crestline submitted the lowest bid, followed by Mansfield’s Jeremy Huff Excavation at $945,429. The Richland County Land Bank will review the proposals before its board selects a contractor, potentially within the next week. See the complete bid report.
🏥 Mansfield Hospital earns statewide recognition
Tuesday announcement: U.S. News & World Report ranked OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital 15th among Ohio hospitals and first in Richland County and the surrounding region.
The hospital received “high performing” ratings for eight procedures and conditions, including diabetes, kidney failure, knee replacement, pneumonia and pacemaker implantation. See the WMFD report.
📚 Ohio author visits Ontario and Mansfield libraries
Ohio novelist Mindy McGinnis will discuss the research behind “Under This Red Rock” from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Ontario Branch Library. The murder mystery, set in Ohio’s cavern systems, explores mental illness and the importance of challenging stigma. See the Ontario program.
