🏠 Veterans and senior housing project advances

Mansfield City Council unanimously approved rezoning the former CenturyLink property at 665 Lexington Avenue for a proposed 61-unit housing development. The Milliron Foundation estimates the project will cost between $26 million and $30 million.

The apartments would serve veterans of all ages and older adults. Plans also call for community spaces, fitness and medical facilities, a theater and a restaurant open to the public. The foundation hopes the Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging will operate the facility and eventually take ownership after project financing is repaid. Read the Richland Source report.

⚽ Local teams dominate Tuesday competition

Several Richland County teams earned decisive victories Tuesday evening. Ontario defeated Galion 4-0 in girls soccer, while Lexington’s boys recorded a 9-1 win over West Holmes.

🚧 Chip-and-seal work reaches two roads today

Richland County’s annual chip-and-seal program continues today on Taylortown and Myers roads. Myers Road work is scheduled to continue Thursday, followed by Springmill West Road on Thursday and Friday and Horning Road on Friday.

🧸 Local leaders confront child-care shortage

Tuesday carryover: Nearly 50 providers, employers, policymakers and community leaders met at Ohio State Mansfield to discuss the region’s child-care challenges.

A U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation study estimates inadequate child care costs Ohio’s economy $5.48 billion annually through lost employer productivity and state tax revenue. Seventy percent of surveyed parents with young children reported missing work or class during the previous three months because of child-care needs. Read the Richland Source coverage.

🥞 Pancakes introduce visitors to pollinator research

Ohio State Mansfield will host “Pancakes with Pollinators” from noon to 1:30 PM today at 1760 University Drive.

Visitors can learn how researchers create pollinator habitat along utility rights-of-way, hear about native bees and butterflies and speak with natural-resource specialists. The free event requires no registration and includes pancakes served with Ohio State maple syrup. See the Ohio Woodland Stewards event.

🗳️ Athlete-of-the-week voting continues

Mansfield News Journal voting remains open for its local athlete and football player of the week honors. Both polls close at 7:00 PM Friday.

Ontario’s Briella Hall won last week’s general athlete poll with 1,008 votes, while Lucas football player Brady Guegold received 1,451 votes to win his category. Vote for Athlete of the Week or vote for Football Player of the Week.
