From our friends at Destination Mansfield – Richland County

I love any excuse to drive through the picturesque village of Bellville. Nestled in the Clear Fork Valley, the winding Clear Fork River runs through the heart of town, and the Blue Bridge marks the start of downtown Bellville’s historic business district. Full of Midwestern charm and hospitality, Main Street is lined with locally owned shops, restaurants, and services that lead to the village square, where shade trees and an Italianate bandstand overlook a wide green lawn.

On Main Street

Life “in the valley,” as locals call it, is relational, laid-back, and full of hometown pride. To get a feel for the village spirit, start your day with breakfast at V&M Restaurant. It is a longtime favorite and a great place to catch up on local news.

As you make your way along Main Street, you will find a mix of everyday essentials and small-town favorites, including a hardware store, home décor and gift shop, salons, and other locally owned businesses that serve the community. Bellville is a walkable village, with many homes located just steps from downtown. Residents can easily walk to restaurants, shops, the library, and the post office, all within a few blocks.

Main Street is also easily accessible from the scenic B&O Bike Trail. You can exit at the Bellville Depot, where you will find restrooms, water, and a place to take a break. Bike racks are available near the depot and throughout downtown. Just a short ride away, Amvets Community Park offers a skate park, pavilion, and additional green space.

When to Go

In the summer, spend time outdoors and enjoy everything Bellville has to offer. Golfers can choose between Deer Ridge Golf Club and Little Apple Golf Course, or enjoy a casual round of mini golf at Der Dutchman Miniature Golf. Throughout the summer months, the village square comes alive with live music at the bandstand. Bring a chair or grab takeout from a local restaurant and enjoy an evening in the heart of town. The Saturday farmers market is another seasonal favorite, offering fresh, homegrown produce.

Before you leave, cool off with a stop for ice cream or a sweet treat at the Clear Fork Dairy Belle. It is the perfect way to end a summer day in Bellville.

In the fall, the Bellville Street Fair takes center stage. Often called the Bellville World’s Fair, this beloved tradition brings the community together for four days of food, rides, entertainment, and agricultural events. Main Street closes down as residents and visitors gather for what feels like a homecoming celebration.

Don’t Miss

The historic mill and gift shop at Elzy Milling and Trade is a destination that draws visitors from near and far. The red feed mill, located along the B&O Bike Trail, has been in continuous operation since the Civil War, except for Sundays and Christmas. Today, the campus includes multiple buildings offering farm supplies, home and garden items, and unique gifts. It is not uncommon to see artists set up nearby, capturing the mill’s character on canvas.

For those interested in family history, the Ohio Genealogical Society is located right here in Bellville. With an extensive library and helpful volunteers, it is one of the best places in the state to research your Ohio roots.

Eat and Drink

Bellville offers a variety of dining options to suit any taste. On the village square, Wishmaker House Winery and Wine Bar serves lunch and dinner in a beautifully restored historic setting. It is a favorite spot during summer concerts, with patio seating that overlooks the bandstand.

For something more casual, local pizza and takeout spots are a go-to for residents and visitors alike. Whether you are grabbing a quick bite or enjoying a relaxed evening meal, you will find plenty of options close to downtown.

Families and Buckeye fans will enjoy the Buckeye Express Diner, where you can dine inside a converted train car. For a meal with a view, the Black Dog Tavern at Deer Ridge Golf Club offers scenic surroundings both inside and on the deck. Der Dutchman Restaurant is another local favorite, known for its homestyle cooking and welcoming atmosphere. After your meal, take time to browse Carlisle Gifts on the second floor.

Where to Stay

In downtown Bellville, Wishmaker House Bed and Breakfast offers charming accommodations within walking distance of shops and restaurants. Several rooms feature balconies overlooking Main Street or the village square, and guests can enjoy a fresh, locally sourced breakfast each morning.

Just off Interstate 71, you will find convenient lodging options including Comfort Inn Splash Harbor, which features an indoor water park, and Quality Inn and Suites Conference Center Bellville. These locations offer easy access to the highway and nearby amenities.
