Good news can sometimes come on the coldest days.

On Friday, we learned here at 1812Blockhouse that our application for renewal a member of LION Publishers, an important association of independent news publishers and publications across the country, had been approved.

This is the second full year that we will be part of that organization.

According to its website, LION Publishers began in 2010 as an outgrowth of research into how local independent online news sites (hence the acronym “LION”) could learn from each other in ways to make their operations sustainable and effective. LION is supported by our 300+ member organizations, as well as by our partners Democracy Fund, the Facebook Journalism Project, the Google News Initiative, and the Knight Foundation.

Other publications in Ohio will regular LION memberships include Clutch MOV in Marietta; The Land in Cleveland; Richland Source here in Mansfield; Eye on Ohio in Columbus; BG Independent News in Bowling Green; Matter News in Columbus; Black Girl in the CLE in Cleveland; NEOtrans in Lakewood; MedicateOhio in Cincinnati; and our sister site, 1808Delaware.

“Membership in LION Publishers has been an important boost for us,” said Thomas Palmer, Publisher of 1812Blockhouse. “The organization has interesting and informative efforts that have proven useful in evaluating our site and fixing our eyes on ways to improve what we do. This includes online forums that allow us to access discussion on what other publications are trying to be better at collecting news and sharing it with readers. Part of the reason we have a profitable operation is from lessons learned from LION.”

More information on LION Publishers is available here.

1812Blockhouse is planning a closer look at the other Buckeye LION publications in the coming days.
