Mansfield helped create one of the world’s first celebrity robots. Westinghouse built the seven-foot-tall Elektro in Mansfield in 1937 for the 1939 and 1940 New York World’s Fair, where the mechanical man walked, talked, counted and entertained crowds. 🚔 Sobriety checkpoint planned for Trimble Road

The Ohio State Highway Patrol and Mansfield Police Department will operate an OVI checkpoint on Trimble Road near Millsboro Road tonight. The checkpoint is scheduled from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM and will be accompanied by increased patrols in the surrounding area. Authorities say the federally funded operation is intended to deter and intercept impaired drivers. Motorists planning to drink are encouraged to designate a sober driver or arrange other transportation. Read the full report

🏈 Ontario races past Lexington

Ontario opened its season with a convincing 35-7 victory over Lexington at Copeland Field. Senior Gavin Miller contributed as a passer, runner, returner and defender, while Cam Powers returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. Lexington briefly tied the game on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Lane Custer to Camron Glennon, but Ontario regained control before halftime. The emotional opener was Lexington’s first game since the death of head coach Andrew Saris earlier this summer. Read the game story

🐾 Shelby shuts out Madison

Shelby’s Griffin Yeager returned an interception 21 yards for a touchdown on the first play, setting the tone for a 54-0 victory over Madison. Quarterback Michael Shepherd produced 293 total yards and four touchdowns for the Whippets. Brady Bowman caught six passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns, added two interceptions on defense and became Shelby’s career receiving-yardage leader. 🏟️ Clear Fork wins while Mansfield Senior falls

Clear Fork earned a 28-14 road victory over Granville after building a 21-7 halftime advantage. The Colts kept Granville scoreless in the third quarter before both teams added touchdowns in the fourth. Mansfield Senior had a tougher opener, falling 30-6 to Hilliard Davidson.
