An after-school partnership between Mansfield City Schools and the North End Community Improvement Cooperative (NECIC), funded by an $850,000 federal grant, has a goal of improving the academic performance of at-risk middle school students over the next five years.

Students at Mansfield City Schools’ four elementary buildings and the Spanish Immersion School returned to classes this past Thursday after a Labor Day weekend that was extended to five days by oppressive heat.
Superintendent Brian Garverick closed the buildings, none of which have air-conditioning, because temperatures in the low 90s pushed the heat index close to 100. “Due to the age of our elementary buildings and the lack of air-conditioning, the extreme heat causes an environment that is not conducive to learning,” Garverick said. Fifty backpacks and several boxes of school supplies were delivered to Prospect Elementary School on Thursday, courtesy of the staff at Richland Correctional Institution (RiCI) and the Women in Corrections Committee.
”Women in Corrections wanted to give back to the community. We began last year by donating backpacks and supplies to Sherman Elementary School,” said Sharon Ochoa, secretary to the RiCI warden. “Again this year RiCI staff donated supplies or funds which allowed us to buy additional backpacks and supplies, items like notebooks, crayons, pencils and glue sticks. Among them is Keli Henry, an intervention specialist in her 13th year at Malabar Intermediate School, who works with students who have behavioral issues. Henry’s “Programming with Robots” proposal was approved for a $1,430 grant from the Katharine C. Bristor Fund. More…

Each of those 3,342 have a story.
