Carousel Works Restoring Historic South Dakota Carousel

Years ago, carousels were often made to be taken apart and moved from town to town, like amusement park rides of today. Instead of moving around, the Art B. Thomas Carousel at Prairie Village has been in one place for 50 years.

This week, however, the steam-powered attraction was taken apart by the Carousel Works company and now is on the move to its Mansfield woodworking shop. Volunteers have long been working to restore the 116 year-old ride, and Cecelia Wittmayer, a member of the Prairie Pasque Questers, is working on grant funding to help offset the cost of the restoration.

When Carousel Works looked at the carousel in 2011, Wittmayer said, they identified some ‘must repair and restore’ items, including the horses and chariots. More…

Richland Traffic Fatalities Continue To Fall; Beware Of Deer

The Richland County Safe Communities Coalition reports that for the month of September there were no traffic deaths in Richland County. There have been five (5) total traffic-related deaths this year in Richland County.

In 2015 there were three traffic fatalities and 13 for the year through September. The five fatalities this year are the lowest since the Richland County Safe Communities Coalition began keeping records in 2004. Renowned Artists To Come To Town To Train Local Educators

Workshops for local teachers, led by some of the nation’s most renowned teaching artists, show how the arts can open doors to core academic subjects. And the three-hour programs at the Renaissance Theatre, including dinner, are free. The continuing professional development series is designed to help local teachers incorporate the arts into classroom strategies through Partners in Education, a partnership among Mansfield City Schools, the Mansfield Art Center and the Renaissance Theatre in collaboration with the John F.
