Council To Consider Acceptance of Sterkel Park Grant

When Mansfield City Council meets this coming Tuesday night, acceptance of a park grant will be on its agenda.

In a letter dated December 29, 2016, the City of Mansfield was notified by JPMorgan Chase that a grant of $60,000 had been awarded from the Sterkel Fund. Specifically, the letter indicates that “…this grant is restricted to hire a park planner to design and create a new layout and new ideas for Sterkel Park…” More…

Richland County Team Selected For Walkability Action Institute

The Mansfield area may soon become more walkable.

According to the CDC, only 20% of American adults and less than 30% of high school students meet the minimum physical activity guidelines. The lack of regular physical activity can lead to onset of many chronic diseases, some cancers, poor academic achievement, and even early death. These and many related issues were discussed in the recent release of the United States Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities, including a list of actions that can be taken to reverse some of the current physical activity trends and could improve walkability and access to safe activity options for the long-term. Lucas Oil Dirt Series Expands To Include Mansfield Next Year

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series has expanded an already aggressive 2017 slate. The captivating stars of the nation’s premier dirt late model tour will invade Mansfield Motor Speedway on July 2 for a 50-lap, $10,000-to-win event, dubbed – The Freedom 50.

The deep, rich and long history of racing in Mansfield, Ohio dates back to 1959, when the original track – Mansfield Raceway – first opened as a 3/8-mile dirt track.  It was converted to an asphalt track in 1999, renamed (Mansfield Motorsports Speedway) and has remained asphalt ever since.  The speedway saw its pinnacle moments from 2004-2008 where it held NASCAR Truck Series events and drew standing room only crowds of over 20,000 in attendance. Richland County Traffic Fatalities Fall To 13 Year Low

The Richland County Safe Communities Coalition reports that for the month of December there were no traffic deaths in Richland County. There were six total traffic-related deaths for 2016 in Richland County. This marks the lowest total for traffic fatalities since the Richland County Safe Communities Coalition was formed in 2003. The record low follows the second worst year for traffic fatalities as there were 17 in 2015. And in 2011 there were five traffic fatalities in December alone. More…
