A last-second shot by former Mansfield Senior High Tyger Mario Young some days ago has propelled the Columbus State Community College Cougars to their first-ever appearance in the National Junior College Athletic Association Div. III national basketball tournament. That tournament experience begins this week.

The Cougars edged Joliet Junior College 85-83 in the NJCAA District II championship game on Young’s buzzer-beating jump shot. Young, a 2016 Senior High graduate, finished with 30 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to earn game MVP honors.

Young was also named to the all-conference first team of the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.

The Cougars will meet Herkimer County (N.Y.) Community College on March 15 in the first round of the national championship at Paul Gerry Fieldhouse in Loch Sheldranke, N.Y. The eight-team tournament will conclude on March 17.

Through 26 games this year, the 6’3” Young averaged 18.5 points and 8.7 rebounds, according to the Columbus State sports information office.

At Senior High Young’s basketball honors included being named to Second Team All-Ohio and First Team Northwest District.
