Mansfield Man Charged With Defrauding Social Security

A Mansfield man has been charged with theft of government funds.

Timothy L. Deener, 47, who receives Social Security benefits, falsely reported to the Social Security Administration for five years that he was not married and that he lived alone. As a result, Deener unlawfully obtained more in benefits than he was entitled to receive, according to the criminal information. More…

Summer Reading Opportunities At Four Mansfield Locations

For many elementary-age children, the term “summer slide” means gliding down a colorful plastic chute to splash into a swimming pool. For Mansfield City Schools Superintendent Brian Garverick, however, it means the erosion of reading skills that can occur between May and August.

“There are summer reading opportunities in Mansfield – the Big Red Bookshelf is a great example — but we wanted something more to combat summer slide,” Garverick told the board of education earlier this month. “So we approached the North End Community Improvement Cooperative.” More…

OSUM Changes The Game With The Math Literacy Initiative

When 22-year-old Natalie Sayre of Crestline decided to purse a degree in Early Childhood Education at The Ohio State University at Mansfield, she knew she wanted to help change and mold young lives. However, she had no idea that she would learn a new way of teaching math that is part of an effort to change the way local students are learning and open up endless possibilities for their futures.

“In class at Ohio State Mansfield, as I was learning this different approach on how to teach math to young kids, I thought ‘Why didn’t I know this as a kid?’ When I was a kid I was never good at math,” said Sayre. “This approach would have helped me.” More…

West Nile Virus Detected In Richland County

Richland Public Health officials have been notified by the Ohio Department of Health, that West Nile Virus (WNV) has been detected in mosquitoes in Mifflin Township.

“To be very clear, this is not a human infection case, but our first positive WNV mosquito sample this year,” Joe Harrod, Director of Environmental Health at Richland Public Health, stated. Health Department officials have already sprayed the WNV positive area to discourage transmittal of the mosquito-borne illness to residents. More…
