Sorry, we couldn’t resist that one. We are talking about garlic, after all.

This year we’re continuing our weekly look at unique festivals, events, and attractions that are within an easy driving distance of the Mansfield area. We call these “Summer Road Trips.” Of course, we regularly feature the many extraordinary places to visit right here in Richland County and encourage our readers to get out and experience what is on offer in our own backyard.

According to its website, it might well be “The Smelliest Food Festival in America.” It’s the 7th annual Cleveland Garlic Festival at historic Shaker Square, sponsored by the North Union Farmers Market.

This grassroots food and music event will take place Saturday, August 24 from Noon to 9 PM, and Sunday, August 25 from Noon to 6 PM.

All proceeds will support North Union’s mission of championing local foods by connecting certified producers with consumers through a network of markets in order to:

  • Supply the community with the freshest, most nutritious food – harvested ripe and brought fresh to market
  • Support growth and incubate over 300 small businesses in Northeast Ohio
  • Stimulate the local economy by keeping money in our communities
  • Keep Ohio land producing food and supporting families, which saves farms from destruction

“This is a natural outgrowth of our ten markets and their close connection with all of the Cleveland area’s top chefs who purchase products at our markets,” states Donita Anderson, Executive Director of the North Union Farmers’ Market. She continues, “This event showcases the tremendous culinary talent here in Northeast Ohio. Many people are not aware that Ohio garlic has a singular special quality because of the soil. This means greater anti-viral health and most importantly, the best garlic in the world!”

The Cleveland Garlic Festival will be ground zero for “all things garlic” in the Midwest Great Lakes region. Attendees will enjoy garlic-themed food prepared by local chefs including everything from ice cream to oysters, an onsite celebrity chef Grill-Off, live music, cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, taste and grow tents for children, and many more events and activities.

Included is the crowing of Miss Garlic 2019, garlic fries, garlic ice cream, Ohio craft beers, and the Ohio Cheese Guild tent.

So mark your calendars and get out the breath mints – the Cleveland Garlic Festival arrives later this month!
