1812Blockhouse continues with our series on unique attractions and events which can be visited this summer on a day’s trip from Mansfield. As always, please remember that there are wonderful things to visit right here in Richland County as well!

Remembering and honoring practices of times gone by continues to be a time honored and fun tradition. That is why the Wolf Creek Grist Mill is proud to be the location for this year’s 18th Century Colonial Trade Fair, August 5 and 6 from 10 AM to 5 PM.

Organizer and founder of the 18th Century Colonial Trade Fair, Ralph Arms explains more about this event, “This family friendly event is about keeping history alive. We are allowing visitors to step back in time to learn how Native Americans lived. See re-enactments in characters that are fully dressed, cooking and camping as they would have lived on the frontier.” Arms stated that the fair is a way to keep kids actively involved in history without even knowing it, “Kids of all ages learn something new here. It is getting out of the classroom and becoming up, close and personal in such a critical time in American history.”

Preserving the past and having fun is what will be found during the fair. Watch and learn as moccasin bags & other leather works will be made right in front of guests. Speaking of demonstrations, Deborah Sampson will make a brief appearance, discussing how she disguised herself as a man and joined the Patriot Forces during the American Revolutionary War. Learn about the families on the frontier and how they fought in the Revolutionary War. Bring the earplugs and watch the cannon be prepared for a firing demonstration. There will also be a mock battle on Saturday and Sunday.

Since it is a trade fair, expect to find one-of-a-kind pieces. Vendors include a blacksmith, bottles made the same way as in the 1700’s, a jeweler that specializes in the 18th century trade silver, purchase period clothing and more. So much to see and do in just two days.

The entry fee is $3.00, but receive $1.00 off if in 18th century costume. Proceeds raised during the event will be used to help the Wolf Creek Grist Mill. “Preserving the past for future generations is our mission with the Friends of the Mill Group, “states Mark Smith, President of the Friends of the Mill Group, “The 18th Century Fair helps to educate visitors of history, along with the working grist mill. It is a natural fit.”

During the fair, make sure to take a self-guided tour through the Mill and its cabins. Wolf Creek Grist Mill is open on the weekends from May to October.

Wolf Creek Grist Mill is located 1 mile south of the Mohican State Park Campground on St. Rt. 3 in Loudonville.
