Spanish Immersion School, Springmill STEM Elementary and Mansfield City Schools Board of Education members Renda Cline and Sheryl Weber will be recognized Wednesday at the Ohio School Boards Association’s Central Region Spring Conference in Columbus.

The program will begin at 6 PM at the Villa Milano Banquet and Conference Center, 1630 Schrock Road.

Spanish Immersion and Springmill STEM Elementary will be honored as OSBA Outstanding Programs. Both schools participated in the Student Achievement Fair during OSBA’s Capital Conference and Trade Show at the Columbus Convention Center in November. The Ohio Department of Education has designated Spanish Immersion as a School of Promise and a High Performing School of Honor. In December 2016 the school was named a National Title 1 Distinguished School.

Spanish Immersion opened in the fall of 2008 with only a kindergarten class of 11. The school now has an enrollment of 230 in kindergarten through eighth grade.

One year ago Springmill STEM Elementary became the first school in Richland County to receive official Science, Technology, Engineering and Math designation from the Ohio Department of Education. The ODE STEM Committee determined that Mansfield City Schools showed evidence that Springmill “will offer a rigorous, diverse, integrated and project-based curriculum” while “emphasizing the role of science, technology, engineering and mathematics…”

The elementary school at 1200 Nestor Drive opened in August 2016 with two kindergarten classes. Two first-grade classes were added this year with plans to add second grade in 2018-2019 and third grade in 2019-2020.

OSBA said Ms. Cline and Mrs. Weber will be recognized as board members “who have demonstrated dedication to self-improvement, service to their association and work on behalf of their own board.” Ms. Cline will receive OSBA’s Master Board Member award which is awarded once to an individual and is recognized for life. Mrs. Weber will receive the Award of Achievement.

In a statement announcing the awards, OSBA said, “Of the more than 3,400 board members in Ohio, only seven will receive the Master Board Member honor and only 60 will receive the Award of Achievement in 2018.”
