Students attending The Ohio State University at Mansfield have the opportunity to make a foreign country a part of their educational experience.
Studying abroad encourages students to step out of their comfort zones and experience a new culture. Rachel Harper, a sophomore health sciences major at The Ohio State University at Mansfield, chose to travel to Japan for her study abroad experience.
“I love traveling. While I was on a tour at the Columbus campus, I learned about the possibility of studying abroad,” Harper explained.
During 2017-18, eight students from Ohio State Mansfield studied abroad. Across all of the Ohio State campuses, 3,176 students participated in the program. Ninety-seven of those students traveled to Japan.
Harper says her decision on a destination was an easy one to make. She said, “I really like Japanese anime. That helped encourage me to go overseas and experience a different culture.”
At Ohio State Mansfield, you have the opportunity to gain an education abroad experience by taking classes through an exchange program or foreign university, complete an independent study or service-learning project, conduct research, or participate in an internship program.
Harper encourages any student interested in the program to take advantage of the opportunity. “It’s a life-changing experience, and everyone should do it at least once,” she said. “There are also a lot of ways to get funding for it.”
Ohio State students receiving financial aid may be able to apply that funding towards a study abroad program. Students must first be accepted into the education abroad program through the Office of International Affairs before aid eligibility can be determined. Ohio State Mansfield students can also apply for travel grants on the Mansfield campus.
“Make sure you have everything planned out and done early.” Harper encourages. “You will want to prepare for purchasing the plane tickets, getting your passport, and saving for any other money you may want to take along.”
“It’s an opportunity I would definitely do again,” Harper said.
What are the requirements?
