The Mansfield Symphony Orchestra will present its fourth concert of the 2018-2019 OhioHealth Symphony Series, “Russian Spectacular” on Saturday, February 9 at 8:00 PM at the Renaissance Theatre. Under the direction of Octavio Más-Arocas, the event will feature a program celebrating Russian-themed masterworks of some of the world’s greatest composers.

The Mansfield Symphony Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Randy Heidlebaugh, will join the symphony. The Youth Orchestra will open the concert with “Dance of the Tumblers” from The Snow Maiden by Rimsky-Korsakov. Together, the groups will perform “Procession of the Sardar” from Caucasian Sketches by Ippolitov-Ivanov, “Russian Sailors Dance” from The Red Poppy by Glière, Marche Slave by Tchaikovsky, and ending with a rousing interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. The Youth Orchestra is composed of 75 student musicians primarily in grades 9 through 12 from the following schools: Ashland, Clearfork, Colonel Crawford, Galion, Home School, Lexington, Mansfield St. Peter’s, Mapleton, Mt. Vernon, Ontario, River Valley, Willard Intermediate, Wooster, and Wynford.

The concert will also include an interactive app called EnCue.  During Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, patrons will be encouraged to open the EnCue app and enjoy the concert like never before, with pictures and insights synced with the music.

Prior to the event at 7:00 PM, music historian Mark Sebastian Jordan will host Symphony Chat in the second floor ballroom of the Renaissance Theatre. These popular free pre-show events offer fascinating information about the program and pieces, stories about the composers, as well as highlighting significant moments in the repertoire. Free hors d’oeuvres and 1/2 price drinks will be served.

Tickets are on sale now for this concert at the Renaissance Box Office, via phone at (419) 522-2726, and online at MansfieldTickets.com. A limited number of $50 Family Four Pack tickets as well as $10 student tickets are available for this event only by visiting or calling the Renaissance Box Office. Full-price tickets range from $15 to $40. The Mansfield Symphony’s “Russian Spectacular” concert is presented in part thanks to funding from the Ohio Arts Council.
