With only 22 out of a hoped-for 50 to 60 coming to an initial training session, the Richland County Board of Elections has announced the addition of a second class.

“A second round of Poll Worker training classes have been scheduled for the November 8th General Election. The class for voters who have not worked previously, or who have not previously attended a training session is scheduled for Saturday October 8th at 10:00 AM at the Longview Center, 1495 W. Longview Avenue in the Upper Level Classroom (enter from front parking lot). This class will consist of an overview presentation of the election process, followed by hands-on Station Training to review each facet of the election procedures. Since this is a combined class of our New and our regular “Station” training, the compensation for attending this training will be $35.00 which will be included with the workers’ check for working on Election Day. Participants should plan on being in attendance for at least 3 hours on this date.

Poll Workers are compensated at the rate of $130.00 for regular Clerks, $140.00 for Presiding Assistants, $165.00 for Presiding Judges, and $175.00 for VLM’s (Voting Location Managers). Poll Workers are required to assist with the set-up of the polling location on the Monday preceding an election. They are also required to work on Election Day from 5:30 AM until the close of polls at 7:30 PM and are required to stay until all the equipment has been dismantled and packed for transport. Qualifications include the ability to lift the voting equipment, general clerical skills, and the ability to follow directions and work well with the public and co-workers. Poll Workers must be a registered voter within Richland County. No taxes or social security contributions are deducted from the poll worker checks. Workers usually receive their check for all the training and working the polls on Election Day approximately a week after the Election.

Voters who are interested in receiving this training and working on Election Day should contact the board office from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM Monday through Fridays at 419.774.5530 to register, as class size is limited.”
